I recon that ought to be a cadidate for the old yoghurt, cow dung and milk treatment to encourage the growth of some moss, that would be the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Yes, agree with David. Mother Nature would really do a grand job of making the mountain look realistic (with a little bit of help).

OK its off to Tescos tonight then, which is the best type of yogurt to buy as in which encourages the best growth of moss etc.

I've not actually tried it Steve, but I understand that un-flavoured natural yoghurt is the thing.

But seriously with Ilkeston being on the Derby end of the San Andreas Fault I wonder if the vertical chicken cliff is going to hold together come the first hard frost?
And if you can bring yourself to do it, beer encourages growth (algae, not tummy - well maybe tummy too )

Had a few sharp frosts already Puggy, its still holding up (at the moment)

Its a tough brute - will open out tunnels like a South American mine.

The old milk and yoghurt trick does do a good job, however the mountains are better in some Shade to make this work best. In full sun it can take years to work.

Another option to make some more colour is to use Sulphate of Iron. It is used to feed Lime Hating Plants and has a warning on the box not to use near Paving Slabs. Secret of application is to water the mountains and sprinkle the Sulphate of Iron on with a flour sifter, a bit here ad more there is the secret of applying the stuff. It will go Green in pretty quick order, becoming a beautiful brown overnight. Start it with small effects first. You can always put more on later, but taking it off. Well no chance.

A great bit of scenery building.
You could collect some moss and 'install' it on a part of the rock slope with a small depth of earth that can be kept in place by sticking some small rock shaped stones to act like a snow avalanche fence (just a couple of small holes between the stones for drainage during downpours). As long as it has a little sliver of soil and is kept moist and it is mostly in shade, it will like it there and thrive.

Perhaps even some artificial 'bottle brush' trees along where the mountain meets the fence.
