Good Morning all,

After a play around in google sketchup, i have decided what my first own project will be.
It will be a small multi purpose vehicle using the playmobil open top wagon (which reminds me of a tara mines wagon without the lid) base & will be RC controlled using the RC Trains kit / Deltang.

Possible Livery?

I'm debating rather to use brass or plastic card, any suggestions would be greatfull, hopefully the next post with pics will be bashing the playmobil wagon & cab building ;)

Looks like a useful vehicle. Look forward to further postings.

With regards to the use of the two materials - I use wood and ply - I would think plastic would be the best. If you follow your 'Sketchup' design (which is angular) then folding brass would not be too difficult either. But, if you were to "soften" the outline with radiussed corners or compound curves, then brass requires a lot more work.

For me, I just sand the corners until I achieve the desired profiles (I was brought up in the days when wooden kits were the norm and still are for boats and planes I suppose).

I'm not really able to make suggestions here as I am a devout bodger :cool::cool:

Be great to see it progress.
 
Reminds me of the old Harz service vehicles.
 
Looks very similar to the LGB German post vehicle..
Law of sod.. Can't find a link / model number for it at the moment..

& I look forward for posting more updates ;) As for the material, the first one I have decided to do in plastic card (if I find a shop that does it at a decent price) & then use that as a template for a brass version later on.

Thank you! I hope it is as useful as I intend it to be. I look forward to building it & posting updates on it. The design is based off (not a replica of) the Irish Rail MPV 790. The design is so that it can be used for multi uses, for example, it can be a shunting vehicle / polite vehicle one day, the next, it could be the weed killer train or it could be on spoil duties with the spoil wagons etc. :)

A little typo there that might make googling difficult, Alan - should be "Draisine", as in the title of the youtube video link.
They are also known in Germany as "Rottenwagen", which translates as "gang car", as in maintenance gang workers....

By the way, thanks for posting the video, Alan - that little blue draisine is wonderful, I'd seen the kits available before but not seen or heard one running. The sound file is perfect for it, especially the start-up and shutdown procedures!
Nice to see the second half of the vid has the orange SkL unit and trailer, again I've seen the models in the German mags but not seen one in operation. I've been very tempted for some time to scratchbuild something similar to the SkL24, especially as the kit for the actual model is something over 600 Euros - I have a spare LGB long-wheelbase power unit from an RhB tractor that I think would work fine under a cut-down open wagon body and scratchbuilt cab.

Never seen the kits but a scratch built one was in Profi earlier in the year.
As for typo - google auto corrected for me - useful sometimes!

Little update & a question of help......

I'll be putting in a order to Playmobil tomorrow for the (x2) wagons so that I can start bashing them, but could anyone recommend anywhere in NI or on the line as of where I can get sheets of plastic card?

Try trawling ebay - often there's various thicknesses and sizes on g gauge or g scale sections - I bought some (but not used it yet) from;

Another Material you may find of use is HIPS. I use it in 5mm Thickness for Buildings but if you can get it it will be more than adequate for the Base of your project. You could try Print Shops as they use it extensively for Signs. Comes down to 0.5 mm and in varying colours. Search "hips plastic sheets"' for suppliers. I found a Supplier near where I used to live and the off-cuts in the Skip were a Modellers delight. I use Pipe Adhesive" to join it, but make sure you get Adhesive in Tubes as the Cans go off quick.

I'll have a look, but online shopping for materials such as plastic card is a hate to me as you always don't know if it will arrive in one piece, un damaged etc, so I'll leave eBay to last. Thanks for the link! Appreciate it :D

We have a local computer repair shop / café & possibly print shop known as inkydoo's (that's their shop name), I'll travel there this afternoon before my bus to DCDR to see if they have any, thanks for the tip :)

Little update, inkydoo didn't have the materials but recommend a shop in Downpatrick which might have some (I know where I'm going on Monday) in stock. The two playmobil wagons have been shipped & according to the postal service are due to arrive on Friday. Yay.
