Thanks for that, Tim - yep, that's pretty much how I do mine, except that I normally cut the brass contact strips off with a pair of fine snips rather than just bend them back as shown there. In some ways, aside from the amount of disassembly and reassembly, the old clamshell blocks are even easier to "digitise" than the later 3-pin sandwich ones (not that the latter are difficult, they just need a little more care in insulating and gently bending the motor tabs and contact pins).
In the end, there really isn't a lot involved in converting any of the gearbox types, and it's nothing to be scared of unless you are COMPLETELY ham-fisted!
