Hello all, a friend has got a LGB Stainz (20212) on Analogue. He wants to make it DCC, its a long time since I chipped a loco. What sort of chip does he need, and other associated parts if needed. Is it just a case of connect the wires and slide those 4 (I think) switches on the circuit board?

He needs either an LGB55021 or a Massoth L (which is better and cheaper!) - cut the wires off the decoder, and the board simply plugs onto the connectors on the loco's main board inside the boiler - flip the DIP switches, put it back together and all should be good - even the nasty scraping "steam sound" will still work if he wants it to!
No extra parts or wiring should be needed.

Call me mad, but having bought some DCC equipped locos and fitted my first chip into a Piko Croc - my second install....

Massoth L into a starter set (78302) - with all the guides surprisingly easy (although managed to forget the mounting plate for mouldings that attached to smoke stack and undercarriage).

However with the massoth L - (using a SPROG II) what do i need to do to alter the smoke and light voltage to 18V (now using MTS III system) - can re write the CV's but as will be my first try thought one of you experienced chaps might be able to give me a clue as to what CV's need altering and to what value.

Also at speed step 1 the standard chuff / toast scraping noise seems out of sync - sometimes treble chuffs and then long gaps - believe this may be down to the pulse generator - any ideas of if I need to play around/alter this to get the chuffs back to sync with the train at slow speeds?

Doh reading manuals and wading through the attachment tables and a calculator does sometimes prove useful ;)

CV 53 is for the lsmoke power level and CV 50 is for the light power level - since each step works out as approx 3% of track power means that I need to set this to 25 (25 x 3 = 75% of track power, 75% of 24v = 18v bingo).

Chuff rate is set up CV 120 - value between 1 slowest and 15 fast pulse - assuming this is generating the pulse for the analogue LGB sound board - will explore and see what works best.

Update; made changes:

Lights and smoke seems happier - may dim lights some more to fit oil lamp look.

Sound wise: CV120 was set to 0 - continuous operation - changed this to 1 and seems to work much happier at slow speeds - no longer getting 3 chuffs or part of a chuff - obviously waiting until I sort out Dietz sound module for the susi interface to upgrade sound to digital.

Programming CV's still a bit of a dark art - should hopefully get better as get more familiar with the JMRI decoderpro software and the principles in general.

For the lights voltage divider...
A good starting figure is the voltage rating of the lamps themselves.. You may well find that '19' is a suitably jaundiced-output from your lamps??
 
The LGB 3 unit outputs about 20 Volts.
