I have just purchased a LGB 65000 from PS in York, (shut today). I have fitted it to the exact instructions using the multi purpose socket on the loco. The sounds work fantastic, whistle etc, BUT on making the locomotive move the 'chuff chuff' noises do not work but instead sound like a constant shudder/thumping noise what ever the speed of the loco. Everything else works to demand. So..... I tried it on analogue and the 'chuff chuff' works great! I have fitted it to various other steam locos, and the same thing, works on analogue but not on LGB MTS. Help!!!!? Or is it the sound module that is broken. It should work right out of the box...... If needed my MTS station is a 55005LGB and the Controller is a hard wired 55016p LGB
 
If you are running on DCC have you set the sound unit to the same address as the loco?

Does it need a wheel sensor to make the chuffs work in DCC I wonder....
 
I believe it's looking for an axle sensor for speed information. I just read the manual online (from the Champex-Linden website) and it looks like CV64 can be adjusted to synchronize the sound if you don't have an axle sensor. The default value looks like 82. Can you read the value for CV64 and tell us what it is? Alternately, you could get an axle sensor kit from Massoth and install it...that would give you the best synchronization.

It is possible that the Module has not been set up to match the speedsteps on the loco chip. CV29 is the key:

CV 29
Bit Value OFF (value = 0) ON
0 1 normal direction inverse direction
1 2 14 speed levels 28 speed levels
2 4 only digital operation analog and digital operation
5 32 short address long address

Really sorry, but you lost me at CV. I bought it as it supposedly works out of the box....... I wonder if PS will do it for me if I take it in?
 
And, pardon my ignorance, but if it needs an axel sensor thingy, how does it work well on analogue without one? It is also programed to the same address as the loco too.
 
You shouldn't need the axle sensor, unless you are worried about exactly synchronising the chuffs to the wheel revs.... for most purposes the sound should be "near enough" without any adjustment or extra sensing kit.

To try the obvious things first - can you take the "black box" out of the loco and simply connect the wires from the 65000 to the track power, select the relevant address and see what happens when you turn the speed knob? If it works OK, then it's likely to be something about the way you've connected it in the loco - if it still doesn't work (ie: the sound doesn't follow the change in speed steps) then it would imply that there is something wrong with the unit. Was it a second-hand one or brand new?

I did try it direct to the track power, and exactly the same, the function demands work fine, but the actual chuff chuff is just the same, a loud thumping/shuddering noise. But also works fine to direct analogue track power.
 
Just a quick question. Does the sound module have to be assigned a number seperatlely from the locomotive. Say i have a loco programed 14, do i have to give the sound module a number 14 indipendent of the loco 14, then plug it in to the multi purpose socket?
 
The LGB sound module does need a loco address programmed into it, as has been said on this thread already. However I would have thought you must have done that successfully because you say that the whistle etc work. When you say that the whistle works do you mean it works when pressing a function button on your handset, or do you mean triggered from track magnets?

Do all of the other sounds work from your handset, i.e brake 2, bell 3, announce 4, air pump 5, coal shovelling 6, sound on/off 8

I suppose you could try address 3 and see if you get the correct operating sounds, but no loco movement, that would tell you that the sound module did not have its address programmed.
 
All sounds work fine via the functions, whistle etc. It is just the chuff that is not there as it should be, sounding more like a really fast diesle engine, with no variation in its speed. What is the correct way of assigning a code to the sound module, or can it be done by plugging it into the multi purpose socket and reprograming that and the locos code all in one, via the track/handset method?
 
I suspect some previous programming may be causing the issue so try a reset as page 7 of the PDF here (14 if looking at the leaflet numbers) cv55. I'm thinking it's been set to a small wheel size or similar.
