Time to return a favour!

I was thinking of buying this set for the coaches and selling the loco on.

Attractive locos, but are they up to much?

I am sure these work well on the rack, but has anyone had much luck with them on plain track?

A chum has one and it is utterly unable to pull a thing without the rack.

Surely the rack is just for gradients?

James

I have owned some over the years, If you have ever handled one you would be aware of the loco's very heavy weight, and internally they have an extremely large motor, they are extremely powerful locos, they have 8 pickup points ( not bad for a 4 wheeled loco!!)

I would not be seeking one if they did not perform well

Incidentally I have never used one with rack inserts so all my comments refer to plain track use

PS does your mate want to sell his them??

Thanks Steve,

I will ask him!

Yes, I am aware of the weight, although we didn't take it apart. I don't think he has ever tried it on the rack either. I do recall the plain untyred wheels typical of all more recent pantograph locos, which always puzzles me as older tyre equipped pantograph locos always ran well from track and catenary, but with good grip that tyre-less locos seem to lack

It has been a while since he ran it. I recall it being very disappointing, so was set aside, unloved and unused, a bit like Welsh Pony although better protected.

I don't think we were over scientific at the time so maybe we missed something? Your posting has rather awakened my interest in it.

I will try to persuade him to bring it over so that we can try it out again. I rather fancy seeing it shuttling up and down on one of my branches.

In fact one branch has a slight gradient...........

Am I the guilty party?

It was my first ever G gauge loco...a brand new LGB yellow and white rack loco.

It was being sold by Beatties just before they went bust, probably in a warehouse clearance to raise cash. At £50 it was a bargain in 1998. A matching coach ( 32073 ) was £15, I was going to pass them on to you James, but decided to keep them....and I've not stopped since.

Anyway, we test ran it, and indoors on level track it seemed fine. I then bought a second hand bundle of a circle of R1 track, and a battered Playmobil steam loco missing roof and chimney for £30, and the 1998 Stainz 30 year set for under £100. Out in the garden on a loose laid track, either of the Stainz or Playmo loco could pull all my stock...some 8 items, but the rack loco could only haul half.

Here's another picture of one, taken earlier this year at the agm of the 3 Counties G Scale Soc area group meeting.

Malcolm....I thought for a minute you were offering it for sale!!!!

I believe you have already recvd a Delivery from Hermes??!!

No, sorry, rack loco not for sale....I have tried it with a rack, and it was very effective...

When I left for work this morning Mr Hermes hadn't been. I may get some grief later from Mrs Brixham ???

Acording to their website , you will have to think up some excuses before you arrive home, ( although they have sometimes made mistakes and 2 days would be a record!!)

It's a loco someone has sent 'for repair'

'Cough'

Although I'm sure that PhilP could use this excuse!!

??? ;) :D ;D ;D

Thanks to Mike and a stock swop, a rack loco arrived here this week, actually intended for a friend of mine, but I may persuade him to let me have it ( or borrow it!!)

Anyway re the discussion previously as to whether these locos were any good on non rack track ( haulage wise) and my saying that my previous one from years ago was fine as far as i could recall, I have just given this one a test on the lead up to my garage storage roads, this being an approx 1 in 35 ish incline.

It happily pulled & pushed (I tried both) 3 4 wheel + 3 bogie wagons thats 18 axles total up the incline several times with power to spare I could not add more stock as the incline actually leads to nothing at the moment, line is still beiong 'planned'

I am currently considering another rack loco!!

The 2nd rack LOCO I was considering buying has gone!

So if any one has one to sell or knows of any for sale anywhere please get in touch!

I am still looking for a 2nd rack loco (LGB) any colour considered digital preferred but not essential.004.JPG

I've found a way of sneaking Stainz locos in, Hide them inside boxes of radio equipment, we've just replaced the clubs 2m equipment and i'm sure my xyl woundn't notice the extra boxes lol
