Would be interested to know what the prototype was for this guards' van - I have one seen here in the background that I reworked to make it less European (and I don't think the US ever had anything like this - let alone vacuum braking for the era).

LGB being a bit creative with the branding perhaps?

(They are a nicely built van however).

There's a prototype for everything

Hi Paul,

whilst I agree there is a prototype to everything (like the double slip in the yard at Pichi Richi railway in South Australia with one track that goes nowhere) I don't think you will find a European style guards' van with vacuum braking anywhere in the US - despite LGB labeling it Short Island Railroad for the US market. ;)

I don't think the Short Line RR line ever existed? I cannot find it in Lucius Beebe's "Mixed Train Daily" book which seems to cover every short line in the US.

Cheers,

It is a Bobber minus the Capula, an LGB a sort of abomination that they used to produce. Bachman I think did something similar with theirs.

Sources more knowledgeable of LGB told me today that this van is based on some sort of European single ended guards' van - US "bobbers" that you refer to generally had platforms at both ends and to the best of my knowledge were never vacuum braked in the US given it was the home of air braking very early on....... (would be pleased to see evidence otherwise for vacuum in the 20th century in the US).

The Bachmann product you refer to looks like this ( a "logging caboose" - sold under various RR names):

Logging Caboose-5.jpg

Reworked they can look like this:

And the LGB van with the filigree roof support removed (and in the case of my van the very European lights on the rear) like this:

The two of them together today (note the roof vents and modified stove vent):

Both cheap and cheerful items - glazing, weathering and roof vents added to make them more prototypical for non-European/US use with my freelance concept - they also work as "match" vans with link & pin at one end and Kadee or Bachmann couplers at the other.

Cheers,
