LGB 24500 - ?working smoke stack - possible?

Have a LGB 24500, 99-823 tram loco..

It has a solid smoke stack, and was given it with a LGB 65103 to fit. - This is the 'long' stack which goes right through a Stainz.

I need a diagram (can't find on Champex site, must be under a different number) and to source the part number for a short, hollow smoke stack which will take a standard smoke unit.

Anyone done this, or know a tram-loco number off the top of their heads?

TIA,
PhilP.

To partially answer my own question:

Have found 25500 and 21500 diagrams.. Neither has 'smoke', so wondering if they have ever done a tram loco with smoke??

I've never seen one with smoke, Phil. The older versions of the tram loco used the same long straight-through stack as the Stainz, of course, so that would be as easy swap - but I've not seen the short new-type stack with a smoke unit....

Edit: please ignore the bit here about swapping with an early Stainz stack - my mistake, while it's a similar design the tram loco one has a shorter shaft as pointed out by others below. Must stop working form my increasingly shaky memory.... ;)

Jon.

Thanks Jon..
Have been searching the diagrams, to see if I could spot a short, straight, hollow stack. But no joy yet.

Did think about drilling the existing stack. - Up through the 'bolt' for the wires, and then the plastics to take a standard smoke unit..
Thing is would need a centre feed lathe, dad's ML7, but one slip and the stack would be scrap. - Probably not a machining job for a novice!
Thanks again,
PhilP.

The tram locos have never been fitted with a standard smoke stack. I have fitted smokers on mine as below.
Remove the chimney.
Drill down the chimney with a long drill until you hit metal.
Using a long punch, drive out the solid metal bar that supports the chimney.
Enlarge the hole inside the chimney until a smoke unit will drop down inside.
Make a hollow chimney support, I used a dead Stainz smoke stack.
Cut to length & glue in with super glue.
When glued insert the smoker dropping the wires down the tube & reassemble.
Sorry I cannot provide photos but the locos were modified ages ago.

Thanks for that Mike..
How well does the plastics of the original stack stand-up to the heat of a smoke unit?

No problem as you finish up with something like a standard chimney but with a shorter metal support. I have had them running at shows all day.
Attached is photo of one that has been converted. You can see the top of the smoke unit in the chimney. I didn`t want to drill it any deeper as I was running out of plastic to drill.shuttle5.jpg

Does anyone have a 'dead' Stainz smoke-stack they can le t me have for suitable remuneration at all please?
TIA,
PhilP.

No longer looking for a 'dead' stack..
Client has decided to look for a 99 821 (the earlier model) which apparently has the 'Stainz type' straight through stack.

Thanks all, details filed away for next time!

The 821 is exactly the same as all the other trams.

Top stack is from an 821 & bottom is a Stainz stack. It won`t fit

Thanks Mike..
I presume he is after this 'style' of livery to match his era / interest ??
Have also fitted S decoder in a 21930 Kof 99 126 for him..

I will put a note in with the tram loco to say the '821' also has a short, non-functional stack. - Suppose I might get this one back to fit after all. will wait and see!

Hi, I have a late Lehmann black version of this tram, I think 23500.
I only bought it last year and when I received it I made the mistake of unscrewing the chimney to see if I could fit a Stainz smoke unit. Something, probably a nut, fell off inside the loco and now the chimney won't screw back in place.

A friend has had a look at it, but we can't figure out how to take the loco apart. Have removed the driver figure to take the body off, but cannot figure out how to remove the black boiler from the floor? I am assuming I will find a loose nut inside? Or does the chimney just screw into the weight, which is now loose inside the black plastic boiler.

We have looked at the exploded diagrams, but they show screws which don't seem to be present on my later version.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Ashley

if you want a modern short stack with a working smoke unit, the one off a U class will fit the tram

The nut is under the motor-block..
If you remove the screws holding the couplings etc. at either end, you can gentle drop the motor-block to reveal the recess where the nut fits. - Sorry, no photo's, I have looked.

Just be careful not to pinch the wires when putting the 'block' back into the chassis.

Thanks Phil, but when we tried to remove the motor block it appeared to be fixed in some additional way in addition to removing the couplings at each end. Either that or it is very stiffly in place, any ideas?
