LGB 20471 Ballenburg Rack Steam Locomotive No#1067

Amazing loco and similarly amazing track laying - seems to be running on carved marble blocks in some sections! :-)

How does it determine to start the rack crank and rods? I thought the rack gear was always turning? Love how the sound changes... one very cool loco.

Greg

It’s sooo cool. The blue Furka will have to be “the one that got away”. I’ll pick up a Ballenburg at the next “one time limited release” in five years... “now with pulsed smoke.”

BTW Greg, I am a new G scale adventurer and I really appreciate all the information, advice, and examples from your website. Thank you!

The engine actually has two cog wheels; one is in line with the rear axle. I wonder if the front wheel is just free, driven by the rack to drive the gear?

There is a parts blow up diagram for 29272 on lgb.com in the manual, but it’s a little hard to follow!

The correct assessment Dennis.

Yes, and notice there must be a sensor on that second mechanism, and the sound system adds another "motor" when it starts turning.

Sounds like the optional sound system is the way to go... there's a loco (minus ESU system) here (USA) for sale for $1,200, I would expect to get everything put into it you would be getting upwards of $1,600 ... but so cool...

There's a second hand 20471 with XLS decoder fitted for sale for GBP 600 (about USD 825) at UK retailer Glendale Junction. Don't know if they ship to USA. http://www.glendalejunction.co.uk/SecondHand.html

Sadly mine will never see the Contra Rack wheel turning as I got rid of all my Rack some time back, but I could not bear to part with the Loco. At least I saw it do some turns on the Ruschbahn Rack Line.

Why not?

All the boiler tubes look to be in excellent order....

Needs new cylinder castings, smokebox, exhaust, chimney, boiler, firebox, steam collector, vacuum pump, steam chest, etc... etc...

Besides, this one can be found in operational condition...

Except it looks like it was in reverse, when moved! - I think the shed doors 'need slight attention?

Doddy,, great video.
I have not seen the. Red drivered versio before

Ah, yes - sorry, I missed the extra photos right at the very bottom of the posting - I'd just been looking at all the ones in the thumbnails below the main listing pic.
It's a weird one, for sure. That cable out of the side tank is really strange.
As already mentioned, if the price stayed low it would probably be worth getting just for the chassis and rack mechanism, but if it goes very far into three figures then I hope the eventual buyer knows what they'll be getting.....

Jon.
Hay good afternoon. I actually just joined GSC and saw this thread and felt compelled to reply as the guy who won that rack off E Bay. I've been looking for one myself for over a year and figured I better grab this one regardless of condition if I was ever going to get one but it looks like some lucky guy found a brand new one somewhere? This one turned out to be mostly in tact and actually does have all the gear on both sides but one side has a shield over the gear which I do not see on the pictures above. it looks like someone tried to cut off the shield on mine so maybe I am looking at what seems to be an attempt to remove a shield but is actually a shield that was added? not sure why anyone would cover up all that gear but maybe it has something to do with the power cord inexplicitly coming out of the side. I have not had time to crack it open and try to re wire for track power but that is the plan. I have found all the missing parts except the dome and some piping but the piping was easy to replace with wire stock so I may just need to scratch build or use a similar dome but she is cleaning up nicely and hopefully will work well when properly wired. A new flat black paint job has it looking almost new so now its time to get dirty and see what has happened under the hood. it looks like I will have to go in through the gear box up, no real obvious screws for the body casing on the bottom but if anyone has cracked open a similar loco please let me know, I'll likely need all the help I can get.

Doddy, me too, same numbers of cars. I love the fancy striping on these versions. What luck. How did you manage to get them? I presume you had planned making a ballenberg train and started hoarding?
For me, i buy a loco, and then decide, "it really needs proper stock".
Kind of a chicken or the egg scenario.
Man, that loco is flying running bunker first. Didnt realize it had that type of speed.
Btw is your loco a strong smoker? Mine is rather pathetic at any voltage. I dont know if its the particular insert or the circuitry. I have this issue on a couple of dcc ready lgb locos.

I started with a Ballenberg baggage for a 'close out deal' of $119 just because I liked it then a year later found a new matching coach for a little more then wanted another but they become very hard to come by for a reasonable price but I did find a new Brunigbahn coach then bought a new Ballenberg loco. :wait: After that I found parts to make the Brunigbahn coach to a Ballenberg one which was a lot cheaper than buying an entire coach. An odd way to go about it I must admit. o_O So a baggage and 2 coaches for me will do. I also have the left over Brunigbahn coach body, end doors, roof and glazing, so a 2 axle car will be made with the bits for something RhB. They are similar to the Brawa 2 axle coaches. :)
