LGB 20471 Ballenburg Rack Steam Locomotive No#1067

Um,( sheepishly looking at ground and putting one shoe on top of the other),


i ....run....analog. (Thinking, still, of how to go dcc)

But even if i run it full 20 volts, little more than a medium stream.
 
Long story Steve,

I had the complete set from new 12 or so years ago, had to sell half of my railway stock collection to get through a bad period financially and lost the locomotive through VECTIS sales.

It's only taken a 12 year search to get the train back together.

I have not run it yet, as I am currently researching how to get a 16-bit sound card into the trainset. Where to run the wires?, speaker locations? etc . . .
 
Fwiw, I have read, on this forum I believe, that it is a fairly difficult task with this loco and even more difficult to fit a speaker. I know it has been done. Best of luck and its good that you have your set back together.

I wonder if you might find installation help/instructions at massoth or other sound car makers site?

You might post a new thread asking for help and how to fit the card. There are some talented and kind folks here.

I find, these cars have unique "feel", literally. Hard to describe, but for the size they seem to be a bit light, yet feel very solid, and the plastic seems to have a different finish or texture than any other LGB that I have, and that's a fair amount. Probably just me.

They DO make a really great looking train.
 
I mentioned that mine ran like a dog, well here os what I did to sort it. Pickups to all Drivers, a job that I may do to another recalcitrant 0-6-0 in my stud.

8ba Screws were used with washers to help hold the wire that was only soldered to the outside screws. The next pic shows in close detail the brutality of the job. Certainly transformed the running as in effect only the outside wheels and the pickup sliders could be guaranteed to collect juice before the mods. Never enough in my experince for satisfactory running at slow sensible speeds in the Garden.

She has not been out of the box since the Ruschbahn closed sadly. Something that ought to be remided. But those Rack Wheels will not turn as I have no rack left after I flogged it all at Glendale.

If you can't find anywhere else to locate a speaker, then get a "flat" low-profile one and mount it under the cab roof, pointing downward, fixed in place with a ring of Blu-tack (or white-tac) - that not only holds it securely in place, but also seals around the edge of the speaker to allow the curve of the roof to make an (admittedly small) sound chamber behind it. It won't be visible from any normal viewing angles.
Massoth sell a couple of low-profile speakers, if there isn't enough room for one of the larger ones - sometimes things like the cab light bulb are in the way - then there is always the tiny 25mm diameter Visaton one (or you can get a slightly larger 36mm(?) one from Rapid and just solder a Massoth lead and plug to it).
I've used this exact mounting method with the 36mm speaker in my green Ts3 (in my avatar along with Heidi) and it works just fine, the sound is surprisingly good.

Alas, I seem to have fallen in love with the Furka too late. I have some ebay saved searches looking out for it. Do you have any other recommendations as to where to look? Thank you!

How on earth do you get images with that degree of clarity within the constraints of image size posting on this forum?

No matter how much I try to downsize my images, unless they are copied off the internet [and therefore not my own] I get told that they are too big.

It's a puzzle, for sure.

Just used the iPad made it focus by pressing the square in the centre and waited for it to focus in. Size of pics from iPad been ok for a while now.

Oh sorry, I use mine all the time for posting in here and occasionally for pics.

My Panasomic Camera is a Panasonic DMC-TZ30 set to max 4320x3240 4:3 14 Meg pics the highest quality it can do though, it is pretty oldish now. These are fine straight from the Camera as well. These are downloaded and posted via the iPad.

I guess if you have a Digital SLR the pics would be much larger, I wonder if you could do a similar setting to the above on a SLR to get pics that work for you to post on the forum every time without nay further faffing to reduce them?

Did you try replacing the all the contact bullets first ?
 
My bet would be that cleaning the back-faces of the wheels would have sorted it?? - I am amazed how often a continuity test, down each side of a loco, shows problems with pickup..
I rarely have to change bullets, unless very worn-out, or notched, stopping them sliding freely.

When composing a post I clicked on the 'Upload a File' button, selected the jpeg photo(s) from my computer hard drive folder(s) and confirmed the selection. Then hit the Post Reply button.

Nope left them and cleaned them as well, that was the first job before I did the other pickups. Still ran like a dog so then pickups sorted it. You can never have enough places to pick up the juice in our small scale. I sometimes wonder how Z even runs at all.

well, being a z dude too, its always always always about very clean, residue free track and wheels.
when my track is clean, and swabbed with meths, and wiped dry, my z locos can crawl, no stalling, even the older 3 pole motors, even the tiny BR 86 and little diesel. just amazing. truly my marklin z, which is NOT as good as others, runs really well. ah those germans. imainge the Japanese offerings are even better.
