Just wondering why are you set on using Ally, would not Bullhead Rail of a largish code wither Brass or Steel suit your purposes? Can have bearings soldered to it and filed easily to get a good shape. I did this in 0 Gauge with a lot of success.

That's a brilliant piece of lateral thinking. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm sure i must have some track that would be about the right size. I think I may have a play.

The router/mill can still be useful for non-rod parts :)
