Increasing my freight stock?

I wondered if members would comment on whether the items on this link. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LGB-10-WAGONS-4033-94040-94607-94080-4041-4011-94006-4032-4040-4002/323294277983?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 are actually value for money.

I think LGB have 2 qualities of model and I would not wish to buy what isn't good value.

Thanks.

Sarah Winfield

LGB only has one quality - the best. The difference is in the detail between the Standard range and the Toy Train range. Some of the wagons listed can be bought for less if you shop around. The real bonus is you will only pay postage once so that makes it a good deal.

In my opinion all genuine LGB stuff is of high quality. The "Toy Train" range (numbers starting with 9) are shorter less detailed models and therefore were originally considerably cheaper. Compare the yellow shell with the other tank wagons. Also some are models with the old couplings, a slightly different style of hook that makes coupling with twin hooks a bit awkward.

Looking at the description:-
  • Model Condition: Excellent - signs of light use
  • Box Condition: All are in original boxes which are all in at least excellent condition with some shelf-wear.
If I were starting again, I would definitely buy before someone else does.

The Shell tanker is a very early model, with the long tank and the old-style couplers - nothing wrong with that EXCEPT that you can't easily add a second hook to the old type, so you're stuck with a hook and loop at one end and a loop only at the other. Old couplers can be recognised by the sharp triangular end to the hook, the more modern ones are curved rather than straight-edged.
Also note that the Shell tanker's top railings appear to be badly crushed and broken, so I wouldn't really say that one is "excellent with signs of light use...."

BUT the overall price is pretty good, an average of £23 per wagon - I'd say that they are all worth that, even the Toytrain range ones (those with the "9" prefix on their numbers), and if you've got the money then the job lot looks like a good buy.
It's a nice assortment of wagons for the money.

I this this is a good value offer, £23 ish per wagon, even with a little fettling you will struggle to better that.

As for the older wagons and fitting a second hook, is quite possible with a plasticard hook and some lead sheet to balance it out. If you get these I will repost how I have made them.

Only thing that I do find with the older hooks is that they are a little trickier to uncouple, but if you are not as avid a shunting and train making up nut as myself that would probably be less of an issue.

Seems a good price for 10 cars. The last 4 are ToyTrain but don't let that put you off. I actually like them. If I were you I'd refinish the two Toy Train tanks to look the same then source a couple more of the Toy Train box vans. They are relatively inexpensive in yellow and blue from the LGB Fantasy sets. I just refinished 3 of them in a light dull green and they really look good together. I think it's good to have consistency with some of the cars in a train. The rest of the cars just leave them as they are, perhaps sell some you don't like.

I had Toytrain as well as LGB, some Toytrain stayed as was and some were tweaked as in weathering. Never any problem. And rmermber David1226 has done all his kitbashes on Toytrain models and look at the results!

When I started in G scale, I brought a lot of the Toy Train wagons. They were and are good quality and excellent value.

Although I now have some of the more detailed LGB wagons, I have some Toy Train container bogie vehicles rake of 9 Shell tankers, several log flats, and a few 5 plank wagons, which I still use in my consists....
