In order to cheer myself up I need to make a decision; something I am not good at, I think.

Which of the following items regardless of finances would you buy?

The first item has extras such as coaches, track etc. The track isn't important as I seem to be building up a quantity.

The second item has the advantage that it is digital.

Or is there anything else for my G scale interest on ebay at around those prices that I might consider instead, please?

Sarah, I looked at both of these yesterday, and though the blue set seems like good value, I was cautious due to the age of it (1981) which makes it over 35 years old. Unless you like the engine and coaches specifically, then I wouldn't, but then I am am not an LGB specialist, somebody who is may say that it is a good buy.
Also as you have already got DCC, then I would stick with that, conversion of this may be beyond your capability, and as such could be expensive to convert.
 
Sarah, Personally I’ve always liked the KoF, and the price is OK but not brilliant. A lot would depend on the vendors interpretation of “hardly used”. There are lots of Stainz experts on this board, and I’m not one, but it would be a good idea to get more info how one of that age is likely to behave before committing.

I do appreciate your input and will see what other members think. I am not adverse to buying either it's a matter of making my mind up.

Sarah, as you've just managed to get your DCC control setup working and you've been playing with your DCC-chipped Stainz, it would be a backward step to buy the Blue Train set - yes, it's an attractive set (and the price is reasonable for what you get), BUT you will be getting an analogue Stainz that you will need to convert to DCC yourself; while this is not all that difficult once you know what you're doing, it's also not the simplest loco to get apart, install a decoder and then get it all back together again - plus you have to factor in the cost of buying a decoder for it.

The black 0-6-0 diesel, being already chipped for DCC, is something you could put on your track and just run immediately with your present setup; even the fact that it is still on the default address "3" is good, as I think you said your Stainz is on address "2"? Thus you won't have to worry about even changing the loco address on either one. The black KoF is a nice loco, they are generally good runners (and the longer 6-coupled wheelbase will be smoother over points than the short 0-4-0) AND they have quite a bit of room inside them (both in the big cab and under the long hood) should you ever decide to look further into the battery R/C route in the future.

I would agree with Spoz that the asking price of £300 is not TOO bad, though I've seen them cheaper; there is nothing to stop you, if you wanted, from contacting the seller through eBay and making him an offer - you never know....

There are loads of other possible things you could buy, of course - and never be afraid to wait a bit especially if something is a fairly standard item, there will always be another one come up soon - but I know only too well from personal experience that if you want to buy something, then you want it NOW to keep up the enthusiasm! ;)
Last night I spotted something newly-listed on German eBay (eBay.de) that was a one-off and really too good a price to pass up, so my finger slipped onto the "buy it now" button.... it's so easy to do! :devil:

Bottom line, if you really want to buy one of the two now then I'd suggest the KoF without a doubt......

Thank you Jon, I have almost made my mind up. Just the comment "the price is OK but not brilliant" I'm hesitating about.

If I'd have wanted a locomotive with lots of wheels I'd keep the 3 Rivarossi "Big Boys" that have! Hopefully in about 10 days time they'll be gone.

Oh, drool - what scale?
 
They are all HO gauge and include a "Cab-Forward" version.

Hopefully Rails of Sheffield will have them soon.

I hope you see a couple of photographs, in case there is any doubt about my sincerity.

They show the "cab-forward" mallett without tender which is packed away. There is a "Berkshire" plus a standard Mallett.

These are just a couple of 30 odd Rivarossi locomotives I have collected over several years.

Looks like it, one from 2016 and one from 2103 as far as I can see!
However it does confirm the suggestions that £300 is on the high side for one of these, maybe make the seller an offer? You never know.....
There are a couple of them on German eBay right now for around the £270 mark, but they will cost £20 or so in postage.
I think I'd expect to find one for around £200 to £250 if I was patient enough to wait for a while.... but then the current one IS available right now.....

All we are really doing is confusing the issue, isn't it...? :cry:

Don't apologise Sarah, smashing locos :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

I model US outline in 1:20.3 (on 45 mm track) because I like lots of wheels. So I prefer bogie rolling stock, and have a couple of 2-8-0s and a 4-6-0 aka a 10 wheeler.

It's mainly because I haven't grown up :emo::emo::emo:

I suspect the ones on ebay.de are the same ones on the ebay uk site.

Sorry about that Sarah. i do wish people would delete old adverts. As Jon has already said, £300 seems high. I got a new one 18month/2 years ago for £190.
