Help please. I'm trying to open up an LGB 2x44x "flat-iron" RhB electric loco, specifically model 24440. I have stripped it down to the bare essentials but I cannot get the chassis piece (part 60 in exploded parts diagram) separated from the "floor" (part 47) - yellow line in the picture below. It is clearly possible as shown in the user guide (red arrows). I need to do this to get to the front and rear light circuit boards (arrowed blue). I can see both ends are free but something in the middle is stopping it coming apart. If anyone has done this before I would be pleased to hear the trickery involved. Thanks, Dave

I *think* you need to drop the pony-trucks / trailing bogies off?

But it is a long time since I had one apart..

If it's like the 20450 two of the four bottom gearbox cover screws actually attach the gearbox to the chassis. I don't remember if the driving wheel sets need to come out too but I don't think so.

Thanks P phils2um
I didn't want to have to open the gearbox but I fear you may be right.
I can't see any other place where screws might be hidden :-(

Not sure they are 'hidden', as such, but it may be two (of the four?) hold the block to the chassis, tying things together?

Another random thought..
If this block has four wires under a little cover on top of the block.. Is there a ruddy-great-long screw under said cover? - I may have dreamt this, of course..

There are two posts molded to the bottom of the chassis which are hidden in the exploded view. They extend through the two holes in the top of the gearbox that can be seen just outside of the worm gears. One of the holes is almost directly below the 17 in the diagram. The posts extend through to the bottom of the gearbox where the two gearbox bottom cover screws mentioned in post #4 hold things together.

Since you brought this up I'm going to start a thread about the gears attached to the drive wheels in these locos and their brethren.

You are referring to part #17 in the User Guide i.e. the motor, or I guess the worm gear of the motor?
I'll take a look tomorrow when daylight returns.
Thanks for your help PhilP PhilP and P phils2um .

I had to edit my reply in post #7 because I realized as originally written it would cause this confusion! The hole in the top of the gearbox I'm referring to is shown almost directly under the number 17 not part 17 in the diagram. It is just beyond the worm gear and mirrored at the other end of the motor.

Thanks P phils2um sorted! Isn't this forum wonderful!

Once it is opened you wonder why it took so long. The screws and posts in question are outlined in yellow. I can now get to the lighting boards (blue arrow).

In fact you can remove the chassis without opening the motor case just by undoing these two screws shown below.
Some more wise words to pass on to your children. :)

Those fiendishly clever LGB people gave us many challenges (intelligence tests?) to us in trying to wrestle apart their many differing designs of trains. I am currently wrestling trying to pull apart my Harz 2-10-2, well not now tried a few months back and gave up the fight!
