Hi,
we've had a G-scale loop for years (about 70ft. of track) that comes out every Christmas. We've been adding rolling stock over 20 odd years, but four yrs ago we got a used USA Trains SD70MAC. It needed some TLC - new motor blocks - but it now runs well. Well this Christmas I decided to convert the SD70 to deadrail.

So after repurposing an RC LiPo battery, and purchasing a Blunami 4408, Buck Converter, Low voltage disconnect and a myriad of 'stuff' I'm done with the propulsion side of things and now need to work out the lighting.

We also tied up my new Bambu H2C printing a G-Scale version of the 1:76 scale Hogsmead/Goathland station - that took a while.

Looking forward to learning more.

Andy

Welcome Andy! I'm in Aiken, SC. Can we see a pic or two of the station? I'm interested in a Bambu myself.
Here you go. The first is the LVCO, buck converter & Blunami waiting for final wiring trim and install. The next two are the Hogsmead/Goathland station scaled up from OO to G. The engine is our first G-scale purchase, a Aristo-Craft ART 21309 G Scale Santa Fe San Bernardino 0-4-0. Its drive gears are shot and just sits around as a static piece. The final ones are of the signal box and station pieces before assembly. I still need to 'age' the station, but keep being distracted by new projects.

The station files are here: Hogsmeade - Goathland station OO gauge (1:76) - Harry Potter train station by Lkdesu | Download free STL model | Printables.com

Hi Andy, welcome to the Forum, and welcome to deadlail running, too! Are you sticking with a Christmas-only setup, or do you intend to expand into the other 11 months of the year?

We're trying to work out a back yard layout, but the back of envelope pricing for track is currently prohibitive. The Christmas layout has now been out for 4 months :-)
I haven't worked out whether track holding its value is a good thing or a bad thing: it means that the track I already have hasn't depreciated too far, but any new or secondhand purchases won't be cheap .

Hello and welcome Andy. I'm another of those "dead rail" battery/rc operators, live steam too. Again started out track power around 23 years ago. Getting too old to get down and clean my teack. With the British weather that is inescapable. I run mostly US narrow gauge, like D&RGW and logging type railroads.

Dont get too disheartened on cost of track there should be a good supply of 2nd hand in decent unworn condition around. Check local or online hobby dealers, Ebay and collectibles specialist auction houses (as in "legecy" sales). Good thing is there are, and have been, quite a few manufacturers of cross compatible track systems out there to what you are already using. E.G. USA Trains, Bachmann, Accucraft, Aristocraft, LGB, Piko and some more niche US suppliers. By cross compatible I mean that their track gauge is - 45 mm and rail type and height - flat bottom/332 thou " (aka code 332) all match yours. Most makes use brass rail but alluminium or SS is out there too. If you are going out in the garden then keep a look out for "flexi" type track too, not rigid and fixed as supplied in sets. Very handy if you want to be a bit more freestyle in your layout design. All the best and tell us how you get on.

Learning more means questions and we are good at questions with so much knowledge and experience here. So fire away and have fun!
