I joined nearly 7 years but did nothing other than a bit of lurking around.I would like to say hello to everyone again , and hope to be active in the forums and will start posting on the new railway i have started this year. I have built the foundations out of stacking blocks and have filled it with soil and broken up concrete.I will have to wait a few more months for this to settle properly, the fill has already dropped a lot over winter .Over the years i have collected a fair bit of the thomas range when it came along at decent prices, pretty far between lately. My plan was to make a British themed railway by adding detail to the Thomas stuff , i have been very inspired by the excellent conversions displayed on this forum , i have nearly finished Percy . I had a track plan worked out , all on 1 level and 2.4m diameter curves , but something just didn't gel right with me about the standard gauge models on narrow gauge, So since i haven't laid any track yet anyway , only scratch built a couple of buildings and put in place a few of the 7 -8 tonnes of bush rock i have been collecting for this over the years i am making a complete about face and will model the modern Rhb something i have been fascinated with watching on youtube for many years now .The rocks i hope should make a nice approximation of the alps. I know the lgb stuff is eye wateringly expensive here in australia, but shorter prototypical trains means i can get away with buying less and hopefully i can make some decent models to fill the gaps. I have a heap of lgb specific questions to ask ,as i have no experience with lgb models.

Welcome along to the loony bin.
8 Tonnes! That is one serious rockery and will almost certainly make a good Alpine range in 1:22.5. There are several RhB modellers here and in various scales so you will have help and guidance. LGB is eye-wateringly expensive full stop. Fire away with your queries, the only daft question is the one not asked.

Welcome back!
So you have been scratching the itch of garden railways for years?

You will find the LGB products run so much better than the Thomas range. If only because pickup of power from the track is better.

Ask away!

Welcome back Grizzmo!

I look forward to seeing your RhB layout....

Thank you for the welcome all

Thankyou for the welcome , have had the railway itch since i was a child, only this year have i been able to scratch the garden railway itch, finaly the 3 magic ingredients lined up together , time , money and energy . Only been able to muster 2 at best in the past.

Thankyou for the welcome , i will post on the foundations i have made if there is a interest , but will have no railway for a few months at least. Ineed to work out a new track plan to begin with , modelling the Rhb using lgb will open up a lot more possibilities than i previously had . I have a fair bit of thinking and planning to do.

Thank you for the welcome all

It has to be in the other parts of the forum, pick the heading relevant to your question and start a new thread there. Don't worry if you pick a wrong section as your thread can be moved to the correct place. A common mistake is postings in the 'Forum help' which is only about the forum and not general help and this area where the welcome often turns into a Q&A session that should be elsewhere. If in doubt the moderators will help you.

Welcome to the forum, RHB have a look in the forum for the Ruschbahn. Some of the early pucs have been lost to the Forum but there are some vides to see plus others on You Tube posted by me on Dunnyrail, Dunnybahn.
Thankyou for the welcome, i have seen the thread you linked very interesting . i have enjoyed reading how you operate your present railway too .As much as i used to enjoy watching the trains go round and round, having a railway to operate (play) looks like fun.

Aha another operating type, best if you can to try to think this out during build. My last railway and this one were thrown together with Operation in mind thus multiple stations and sidings to give wagons destinations to go to/come from. Also stock revised over the years to replicate my chosen prototype in the Harz Mountains Germany, I have a few odd locomotives and wagons that do not quite fit in but the 6 wagons are assumed to have been stolen from France during WW2 and as pretty well mist of the Metre Gauge lines subsequently closed by the time the wall came down were never repatriated x East Germany, though my period of time is 1981 well before that. Always happy to help if you need any long distance support for Operations, have been to the RhB a few times so have some understanding of how they operated Freight back in the later days of last century. Though why not do like Andy did with his Ruschbahn, invent you own Canton and Railway with links to the RhB, thus you can have stock from that line but some Swiss style stock for your imagined line. Small is beautiful in model Railway terms so your line can be quite modest.

I agree , will not lay any track till i have worked out a plan with operating in mind. That's what set me off on the thomas/british theme to start with , 1930's to 50's branchline , storage to terminus with 3 intermediate stations along the way .Some extra wagon generating industries at some stations to add to the general freight traffic was the plan. I will definitely take you up on the offer Jon regarding freight info, apart from youtube which has tons of videos i have found a fair bit of info already . I have a reasonable amount of room so should be able to fit something in that's fun to operate, space to make and fit interesting building models, room for plenty of plants, a pond and to watch the trains go round and round as the mood suits . i will be starting small in terms of trains, i can see it being many years till i fill a roster .I have watched some videos that, too my aussie eyes ,look like crazy operating videos . Trains with a couple of wagons ,passenger trains with a freight car or 2 stuck on the back and a 3 car allegra set shunting freight wagons at a station.

Hi Stewie
Welcome to posting on the forum.

Operation is something I too enjoy and also set in the UK in the 1930s - and also most of my early stock originated as LGB though I have now converted all my locos to battery RC.

More than happy to bounce ideas about.

In the meantime, take a look at the blog post about the rationale for my railway - we may have some overlaps of interest

Thanks for the welcome Rik, I have spent many enjoyable hours reading through the wealth of information on your blog and have watched nearly all your videos on youtube. I have read that post and I was proposing to do something very similar to what you have done, except as a mainline - branchline . I started collecting the thomas range second hand a few years ago .As a affordable way to have a British looking mainline (admittingly narrow gauge) railway. When prices seemed reasonable, wagons are nearly 4 x the prices now and coaches, locos have doubled in price . I was talking with my wife and she made a few comments along the lines of, how long the thomas g scale range will be made and paying a premium price for something that is a compromise. That resonated with me , so i decided to pivot before i was too far down the rabbit hole and I will now try a more modern railway with a RhB based theme. I will certainly be paying more of a premium now, but from what I have seen the lgb models look pretty good (should be longer lasting than the bachmann thomas range?)and it looks like I will still be able to shunt and run small trains in a prototypical way.
