Help With Finding Rare Items

Hi All,

A member was looking for a somewhat difficult to find railcar. I happened to be looking for something similar. So when I found an item on Ebay that either matched or came close to the members request, I emailed them with a link. Then the thread was dropped and I was cut-off from further communication. There was zero pecuniary remuneration in it for me. So now I'm confused about the protocol, and I admit, somewhat vexed. What did I do wrong?

Hi John,
If you know the member's name or email address can you not just contact them again via email or PM to pick up the conversation? I don't know why the thread was dropped but it shouldn't stop you communicating. Have I misunderstood?

No, I don't recall the member's name. It was a simple act of forwarding the Ebay links, not anything personal. I just know that the member was in or around England. Perhaps my offer to help in cases where U.S. seller's were not willing to ship overseas was perceived as a scam. And if that is the case, it's the part that bother's me.

If you sent a PM or email there may be a record of it in your email sent folder or PM "older messages".
I doubt it was pulled because of the possible reasons you mention. Maybe the member left and all his threads got deleted as a result.

If emails and threads are deleted when a member leaves, then that is most likely.

"the thread was dropped"... you mean a thread on this forum, or emails not responded to?
Yes Greg, the thread is no longer there and there's no record of "sent" messages in my homepage. Seemed strange. That's why I thought I might have done something that's outside the rules of this forum.

I STILL think it a real shame that if a member leaves, ALL their content is deleted..

Part of the point of posting is to create a repository of knowledge for those coming after us..
:(:cry::cry:

So you don't mean a topic/thread I think, but perhaps a private message/conversation.... it is really unusual that at forum thread is removed.

Also, you talk about "sent messages" and you don't send a post on a thread, but you do send private messages (called conversations here, weird).

So, just to confirm, you were using a private message to a forum individual?

How long ago was this? Do you remember the user name? Have you contacted an admin on this forum?

Greg

Yes, the topic / thread / subject was removed from "Items Wanted." Furthermore, and as near as I can tell, all personal correspondence with the member who started the topic / thread / subject was also removed. I'm not a computer wizard, so it could be my inability to access my past personal messages.

I just wanted to know what was the cause and why the topic / thread / subject and personal messages were removed.

To access past personal messages, click on the envelope icon top right, click on text that says "Show all (conversations)…" and it will list all the messages you have ever sent or received.

Surely only if they have NOT been deleted from the server, in which case they no longer exist, or have I misunderstood.

You may be right Jimmy, I wasn't sure if messages you wrote would be deleted if the recipient got deleted.
I think some admin needs to clarify what happens when a member of the forum is removed. As mentioned earlier in this thread it would be a shame if some useful info was lost as a result.

Paul stated (when I asked) that if a 'person' goes, there content goes.. - Though the two actions are separate, and he admitted sometimes forgetting!

A case in point:
i believe David was of a mind to leave at one point? - Not sure if he asked to leave? But luckily, his content was not deleted, and he decided to come back / not leave.
Imagine losing all that content?

I did suggest that unless there were legal reasons, or an express request for content to be deleted, it would be 'better' if content was retained.

The whole subject of a 'digital will' and what happens to content after someone leaves (either the Forum, or more permanently) is a mine-field.

There are a number of sites, where I have expressly asked if I may make a read-only copy of the content. - These sites are a mine of technical information. Some to equipment we still use, but the original manufacturer (and source of information) have long-gone.

User content is indeed a thorny subject. I have always felt it would be nice to be able to retrieve ones own posts, particularly those where one has posted the Start of the thread. This would be if great boon should one need to use that content even only in part for a Magazine Article. I have in places gone through my content to do just that, but it is a laborious copy and pasting process. Plus since some update at some time to the forum it is somewhat tricky to find those Threads. Content is findable but that is many many posts, this one just another to add to the list.

Dear Friends,

The member in question is still a member. Only the request thread on "Things Wanted" was deleted, along with the corresponding emails.

So, I thank you one and all for your contributions. Mystery solved,... I think.
