Height for overpass?

My Stainz
That reminds me, the Garden Railway that I demolished last year had some LGB Track that had had just under a CM taken off the bottom of the sleepers. Not a lot but may help with the lower level. I had wondered why it had been done as there were no Bridges or Tunnels on the line, I guess it was to reduce the steepness of a climb a little. But would work equally well under a bridge.

Now that's an interesting thought which hadn't crossed my mind, thank you Dr. My layout is on a poolside deck so I cannot dip it however I may be able to take the bottoms off sleepers to get another centimeter. I think I will go with 19cm and try my trains out on that grade, knowing I can likely shave another CM down below if needed . The run up to the next area of my yard is about 12 meters and the steepest section will be the 4m run to the first overpass. I do not run long trains or in the rain so the grade might not turn out to be too much of a problem.

at last! someone who measures in english.
When I asked a similar question a few years ago, of a man with vastly more experience and knowledge than I can hope for, he said 9”, which is almost exactly 1 handspan (for me, anyway). I shaded my clearance to about eight and a half inches. It seems to work well... but I agree, it’s a great help if you can lower the track/trackbed slightly as it approaches the bridge/viaduct/whatever.
