As an aside, this loco is the worst model Piko ever made, my dads has worked its way through 4 worm-gears which just seem to wear down over time until the motors run but with no movement.

Maybe, or maybe your gears are not set right. Mine must have done the best part of 2000 hours , often with 6 coaches on the tail. The alloy wheels are crap but i am on the first set of gears.
Those Wheels certainly are Crap Alan. But I still see that some (including 218's) are running. Quite how is beyond me without scrubbing the Wheels everytime they are to run. Oh I have chipped both of mine (218 n Kamel with Massoth Sound Chips) which I think compounds the Fenally.
