Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Brilliant!
Many, many thanks!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

*Others please note:
This is JUST the sort of thing that could go in a 'knowledge base' of 'Things you need to know' as a 'sticky' thread.*

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Not the usual pictures today, was to tired after a hard day tree pruning. But while the Bush Jigger ran to keep me company while I put myself around the outside of a well earned amber liquid I played with the panorama feature on the iPhone so you can see that the H&MGR is really a pretty small humble affair. Firstly from the patio area, Kakariki station in the foreground and Nina's Trestle mid screen with a stretched Bush Jigger on it :)

If one goes up the steps to the right of the first photo, turn left this is the view. ;) Church Cutting obvously at right leading to the top tunnel through which is Punga Cliffs station and at the far side of the small lawn is where the log loading siding is.

And yes I did drift off, just for a wee while while sitting on the garden seat after this ;D

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Wow John! I think that's the first pictures I've seen of your line that show's it 'All' It's something like I envisaged my line but never achieved. someday perhaps when circumstance allows.......................................Paul

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

That is great use of the available space !

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Now that's beautiful
Can see the other photos in context

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Great John. Perfect photos.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

;) Cracker shots, JR (still, I expect no less) :D

Yes, 4 mid winter days in a row ideal for train operation... whole weekend without a cloud in the sky (in other words, typical Wellington weather). And here's me, laid up in bed for 4 days with a throat that feels like 100 grit sandpaper, and a brain rattling cough to go with it. >:(

Still, managed to regain some sence of healthiness by Sunday 'arvo, and got the lawns mowed.... can't have untidy lawns detracting from the railway, you know.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Your lawn always looks way better than mine Gav.

After a spot of hedge trimming, well major cut back :o The hedge is on notice, one more year to come right or it too will meet Mr Chainsaw >:(

Anyway the Simplex was the choice of train to end the day...
IMG_1816.JPG

..it was also a change to check that after a slight modification of the bottom cover plate it would still get over the winter growth of moss. It might soon need pruning too in the shade spots :o
IMG_1819.JPG

I reset the check rails on Fluffy Bridge as the glue had once again failed and the Simplex was getting derailed by the lifted check rails. Won't fail again, the check rails are screwed in place this time. :D

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Off Fluffy Bridge just before Church Cutting....

Another angle with the Simplex in the same spot. My favourite shot of the afternoon ;)
IMG_1824.JPG

Last one for the day, sun was just about to drop behind the hills. Nice while the sun shone but got cold quick when it went down,

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Nice pics of the Simplex - with the line looking great as always. :o

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Thanks all :D

Things have been a happening on the H&MGR, the big focus being working on the sawmill so I don't have to have you imagining what's in my mind's eye ;) it's almost finished and has rested in place a few times to test the fit. (It won't be living outside though, just our for running sessions).
IMG_1892.JPG

The Dubs A has had a run, it came out for a run on my birthday. Special loco's for "special" days ;D
IMG_1902.JPG

Of course it has been important to test Manawnui and it's train of log bogies for a fit with the mill :)

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Kaitaki had a steam today, coming up the hill having passed under Fluffy Bridge....
IMG_1903.jpg

...approaching the level crossing....
IMG_1904.jpg

...very close to the level crossing ???

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Reverse angle sort of ;)

Passing behind the log loading siding at Punga Cliffs....
IMG_1906.JPG

....and through Punga Cliffs station. Not a very good photo but it was worth trying to catch the drift of the steam you see :D

Last one this shift, Manawanui trying to play silhouettes :-\

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Time for the next update.
In a rare case of free time on a Sunday and the last day of winter to boot it was time to clean the track for track power. Well it wasn't a big job, in fact the Tram Engine only hesitated in 4 spots with just by usual damp cloth wipe. A quick run around with the LGB track cleaning block and wiping as I went with the camp cloth and in 15 minutes you'd never know it's been months of live steam and battery power since track power had been used :D
IMG_1951.JPG

So lets go for a ride with the Tram Engine and a Sunday picnic train of GSM coaches....
IMG_1955.JPG

GSM, that takes me back a bit!
IMG_1956.JPG

True the Tram Engine and coaches don't quite match a bush tramway, but Rule 8 does still apply on the H&MGR ;)

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Spring tomorrow offically, but it felt like spring today ???
IMG_1960.JPG

Now one of the tasks for the day was to sit on the garden seat, read Mike's most recent article in Garden Rail accompanied by a brew and run a train. Almost felt like he was here ;)

Running along the top of an ivy clad cliff ;)

And up the hill past the Bridge Gangers Hut

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Kaitaki followed once I had rested on the seat and the sun continued to warm the day.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Up hill about to pass by the Bridge Ganger's Hut again
IMG_1972.JPG

Nina's Trestle again...
IMG_1973.JPG

Downhill again. I could happily do this all day ;D
IMG_1974.JPG

The Tram Engine waited patiently in case it got to run again after Kaitaki. Which of course it did ;) What a way to rest on the Sabbath :D

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Some great shots, John. Looks like you're getting more opportunities to run trains during your winter than we're managing during our summer.

I do like your sawmill btw - must get around to making one for my railway sometime - I have the siding - just need to make the mill
