Gauge 1 layout on Hadrian's Wall

As requested on my new members' thread, here are a few photos of my Märklin locos, Rössle and Luzie, and the passenger cars. They weren't blue, and only two. And are more recent than the locos, being plastic, but still in keeping. Also some shots of the site and the rocks available for constructing some (hopefully) attractive terrain. As mentioned before - I hope to convert the locos to battery power and RC. Today I cleaned them up and took the pictures. I feel very lucky to have these beautiful little models! They deserve a good layout. The stony bank is on the route of Hadrian's Wall, but it's long gone just here.

Nice loco's and a beautiful setting. Plus lots of rocks, I like lots of rocks .

Thanks Grizzmo. I haven't retired yet, but hoping to start landscaping soon. That area needs sorting out. The stone was all from the garden and left over from some collapsing walls that were part of our old cottage and outbuildings. We reused the stone but the inner layers of the new kitchen that replaced the old buildings were insulating blocks, so there was a huge amount of stone left over (and ended up dumped up there). I built that wall under the models first, but there's still plenty for making a good rocky terrain, maybe a gorge!

Hm nice location and lots of material for using. You will eventually discover the joys of a track powered line under a tree cover. For what it is worth providing domestic authorities agree you would be better to go for some of the open land not under trees seen in some of your pictures. The sap and leaves on the track will drive you nuts.

What a lovely loco's they are! I had never seen these 'tin' ones before, very charming. And your site looks like a perfect area for your layout.

Nice locos and even nicer location for a railway, I would use your old track first to get something up and running (once you've put batteries and RC on the locos) it helps get an idea of what's possible and we just want to run trains anyway

Thanks Dunnyrail. Leaves will be pretty bad in autumn but the trees aren't sycamores - those are very messy and sticky. Mine are beeches so not too bad. I'm resigned to regular track clearing! I'm not going for a powered track as I think pick-ups would struggle with track not being shiny-clean. I'm hoping to convert to battery power with RC - hopefully that will be easier to run with my site conditions. I expect I'll need to find a tender or other suitable wagon, baggage van? to house a good rechargeable battery. I'm here to find the way, outdoor railway is all new for me!

Thank you Playmofire! Neither can I. Loads to do but I hope I can manage it. Beautiful day here, up to 22 degrees - pretty good for Hadrian's Wall! Hadrian would have felt quite at home.

You're right - beech trees are fairly well behaved, but battery is the best option IMHO - when down in Sussex we had some beech trees on the road verge alongside the back garden, and on a summer evening the locos would begin to stutter on the track. It's fine here in Norfolk - different conditions, different vegetation etc

Thanks Rhinochugger. Marklin don't seem to make much for their "Spur 1" now. Nothing to match my locos and passenger cars - and the prices for what they do make are phenomenal! Glad you agree with battery option. The RC/battery power system seems to open a whole new range of possibilities for outdoor tracks.

The prices for many model railways are now fairly stratospheric - in 00 the normal price for a bogie coach is around £60 ................ it's safer in the garden
