G Scale Tram Project

Well its been a while I know but large scale trams have never been far from my mind.

In recent months the 0 gauge pre-grouping layout has progressed well, not so much the trams. So over the last month I have been doing some more pondering, and because I along with someone else have decided to build an exhibition layout, the decision has been made to give large scale DCC.

Sticking with the KW Trams 21E truck, and the superb Melbournesparks traction motors the first trial with 12v DC to start with, once of course I have a section of the test track with the rails insulated from each other.

Here we have the first track powered truck on test, the dip found by the trailer was the first piece of large scale single turnout I'd ever built and needs a wee bit of attention, it doesn't cause any problems and the trams with larger wheels than those fitted to the trailer don't have the same problem with the wheel dropping in the gap.

The decoder has been fitted to the tram body, I wanted to make sure everything worked fine on DC before wiring in the decoder.

A bit more of my adventure with 45mm gauge trams. One of the things I haven't really found a happy solution for has been couplings, while looking for a 7mm scale coupling I came across Dragon Railway Auto Coupler (usual disclaimer), a friend printed one off which I have now assembled, the 3D print file also comes with a self centering piece which I haven't decided if I'll adapt and use yet.

Apart from building a couple more trucks, this time for track power (at the moment) and starting the modify one of the balcony's on a bachmann tram, I haven't progressed things too much with my large scale models.

The description says it uncouples with very little force, but doesn't describe how the force is to be applied. Have you uncoupled them? I expect having a set in hand would make it obvious.

Did you watch my wee video, it requires very little force to uncouple, I just haven't yet worked out how I will apply that wee bit of force.
Finding a good realistic coupling working coupling had satisfied me just now, now stage 2 to make it uncouple, where would the fun be if this hobby was all simple and straightforward

I can't remember how long ago it was not, but in the past I purchased an item from someone and they very kindly sent me a second item with a note saying "I like to see what you can do with this".

This model has sat on the shelf taunting me long enough.
Sitting last night scrolling through some photos they have and I finally came up with something.

A coupling of years ago I made that auction site purchase which wasn't quite the bargin I thought I was getting. Not to be deterred and taking it as a lesson in life I kept it.
That fubar has turned out to have a happy ending.

So yes I'll get to the point. The fubar purchase has been a donor for parts to make something of the donation I very kindly received.

The conversion, vet to be properly built, is presently held together with bluetak, but I'm sure readers will get the drift of my plan.
