I have a bogie brake van which I want to letter with "S R " of the style used by the Southern Railway on the Lynton & Barnstaple.
Does anyone know which is the closest font I can use for this type of letting and numbering ?

Many thanks

Most if the Station signs were Gill Sans of one variation but not sure if this is true for the stock. You could try Brandbright or Blackham Transfers as there have been kits before so they must be available somewhere.

Garden Railway Specialists make a waterslide sheet for L&B freight stock that includes transfers for Sothern era stock. They also make a full wagon kits too that got somewhat overshadowed by the Accucraft range.
Max.

Many thanks for the suggestions.
The sheet of L&B Freight is most likely OK.
However, as I have only 1 wagon to letter, a total cost of £20 is a bit high.
So, I may still try printing my own and the original question remains as to what font was used.

Any help here would be great.

Many thanks

There's a website called 'whatthefont'. If you scan in the font, or paste and copy from a web page, it does a good job of telling you the name and where you can download it.

Try asking the L & B via the website , they are usually able to answer most questions .

Re: FONTS FOR SOUTHERN RAILWAY (LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE)

I've searched for this quite a while as the commercial transfers are very expensive. Best I've seen is £10 a wagon, which doubles the cost of the wagon!

The font is a plain one without fancy bits, (sans serif) I think aerial is pretty close.

I found some vinyl letters on the internet that work well but I ended with wrong font so had to adjust them. Felt too bad to send them back ad the guy did them especially for a couple of quid (10 letters)

I can find his email again if you want to try but stipulate that what font you want as I just sans serif bad ended up with a "serifided" one.

I'm tempted to try these ones for model boats

I've also bought some stencils in arial which look the same. Not tried them yet though.

Let me know how you get on as I'm desperate to find a cheap solution.

I intend on building a rake of china clay wagons and they will need loads of lettering.

Also need some coach decals for my railbus (gonna go commercial)
