Fixing #6, 'Old Reliable' revisited

There's nothing in this hobby more indestructible than a Stainz... well mostly. Back in October #6 took a tumble off the roof of the car while we were packing up from a show....

The cab breaking loose was actually the minor part. Several bits of spendy "jewelry" went flying off to parts unknown, too...

Anyway, since it was already apart, I decided it was time to see if I could adjust those "slightly off" proportions that had been bugging me. Step 1 was to raise the cab by 6 scale inches.... The easiest way to do this was by using some 1/4" basswood.

Of course this also meant filling in the very same area I cut away back when I mounted the cab.. happy! happy! joy! joy! At least it will be hidden behind the generator.

Old Fritzie looks much happier now that he isn't bumping his head on the roof....

Aaaaaaand it was also time to do something about that 6 foot tall chimney. I'm pretty sure I totally trashed the smoke unit in the process, but since I don't run smoke anyway, that didn't bother me too much.

I don't remember if I shared this before. Among the stuff I got from the last junkbox swap with Vic was a pony truck frame of indeterminate origin. I changed out the plastic wheels for some New Blight metal ones. It seems to work pretty well - so far.

I haven't really figured out the backstory to justify the changes yet. The best I've come up with so far is the fellow that bought her from the AV in 1948 made some changes; adding the pony truck to make her ride better, and had to shorten the stack because it got broken off by a tree branch while it was being moved by truck. Pretty lame....
