Feldbahn cum Field Railway Stock

Way back when I was starting my garden railway, I read an article in Garden Railways about tight curves and smaller rolling stock. The article stated that if your railway has tight curves, i.e. R1, then shorter rolling stock will not look out of place.

That was all I needed to learn. I went on and still am to some extent enthralled with field railway type stock.

Madman, I would be interested to know something about the last vehicle in the first video you could tell me, thanks.

David, that is the LGB 3019 post van, no longer made, on a short bogie chassis (30cm).

I've converted a few wagons myself having seen what Dan Madman did, namely a Matra crane and a couple of container flats....

I got an open wagon from Gizzy on one of those short wheelbase bogies, found a right one for my theme of opens and recently used the bogie chassis for an LGB Playtrain Tank Wagon.

Today a pair of Binnie wagon chassis arrived, they are perfect for me to build a couple of short wooden decked wagons, they should also be easily used as bolster wagons to carry rails.

Because the Binnie wagons are so light I'll need to weight them down quite a bit, which shouldn't be too difficult.

Not my planned solution, but one that will allow me to have the train of non-passenger stock originally envisaged.

By all means. It is an LGB postal wagon. I swapped its chassis for an American type. The reason being is that I find LGB four wheel rolling stock will derail sometimes on my less than perfect track. The axle spacing is at the upper limit of what my railway will tolerate. So by fitting two four wheel trucks ( bogies ) the axle spacing is drastically reduced.

It's another reason I like to run field railway type cars. I find that LGB Toy Train rolling stock works as well as my field stock, due to their close axle spacing.

I have some of these:

and some just the basic flat bed which would be a good basis for some customs.
The 4 cars (each pair) with the fake plastic chains were tied together with 3 pieces of LGB 1 foot/300mm track. I took off the loop coupler and added a Kadee knuckle and now I can rotate the car and have either coupler (read instant coupler change). These cars were available in the 30th anniversary set with 6 straight track, and also in the construction set with orange girders.
