a look at page 10 of your handbook, it suggests lowering CV 55, but I've also found that CV's 53-55 may need altering.

When I get home, I'll have a look at my loco's.

Also, lowering CV 2 helps.

With respect to Cheeky Monkey there may be a little more to it and that link is there for a reason. It matches the impedance of the loudspeaker to the amplifier. There is a diagram on page 12 of my 4th edition (August 2005) of the Loc Sound XL manual explaining this which I suggest you study before taking action. Hopefully your loudspeakers will have a label stating their impedances.
These sound decoders are designed to work O.K. on analogue, I mention this as it may explain why the loco doesn't move off straight away. Such a feature is useful on analogue as it allows the sound unit to produce relevant sounds before the loco moves off.
As you can see from your manual many characteristics of the chip may be configured to suit individual requirements. I suggest you consider visiting a fellow member or friendly dealer who has a programming interface and the expertise to get the locos set up exactly as you wish.

Longer answer, my experience of these decoders is very limited, hence my recommendation to consult other members and/or a dealer, made incidentally before I saw Big Jack’s offer of assistance. My motivation in replying to your post was to hopefully dissuade you from doing something that may just possibly have dome some damage.

At the risk of stating the obvious try a few different speakers, just make sure the circuit board link is set to match the speaker impedance. In general an indifferent speaker can sound rather good in an appropriate enclosure and a good speaker can sound rather poor in a bad box. Sadly in model locos there is rarely room for a reasonable Hi Fi speaker let alone a suitable enclosure. Having said that a lot of time and money has been spent on miniature speaker systems for ipods and the like. If you can lash up one of these, or even a speaker from a home Hi-Fi, on a static test bed at least you'll know if it's the chip or speaker that needs work. Another trick is to place the existing speaker in an (empty !

) coffee cup and put the palm of your hand over the top, that'll give some idea of the effect a different enclose will have.

CV63 controls the volume but there are a couple of other things to consider first. Is the speaker correctly set up, ie is it confined within the body, which muffles the sound, or mounted correctly by a grille? also is there a sound enclosure to isolate the front and back of the speaker. (the enclosure may be a supplied round plastic enclosure or even the body of the loco as long as the front of the speaker is ported through a grille. This second part makes a huge difference as it stops the sound waves from the front and back cancelling each other out.If you want load dependent sound, set the volume below the max or it has no way of increasing the sound when under load. See below from the lokprogrammer manual.

Just got back from babysitting duty

Just checked my own loco setting.

CV2=6
CV5=64
CV6=22
CV53=56, default =56
CV54=8, default=32
CV55=30, default=24
CV56=64, default=64

This is how my own loco is set, and it runs fine.

CV's 53-56 I had to alter to make the loco run smoothly.

The ESU lokprogrammer allows you to export the whole list as a text file that you can insert into WORD, evidently the SPROG does a version as well but I haven't tried that yet.Very useful if a fault happens as you can compare the original to the readout from the fault and find out what got corrupted. Happened with Heidi when we tried to program it with the 55016 universal remote. The programmer allowed a quick rewrite and all was well.
