Empty Spools

My No2 Child has got a 3D printer,, which seems to work very well for her. The only gripe I have is that the spools that carry the plastic thread are non-returnable.
Does anyone have any (polite) suggestions as to what to do with them, as it seems an awful waste

I put mine in my council provided kerbside recycle bin.
 
2" video tape spools, would be cut in half, and used for hanging patch leads, test leads etc.
But I doubt most have that many test leads?

There you go. The idea of *********** light holders is a good one, but I was thinking more of recycling them back to their original use. I would have thought a return/ deposit system could have been set up
 
I had some rather nasty black ones that I covered with coffee stirrers to make an empty cable drum load load with. But that would probably only account for a couple at best.
 
some can be reused as raw material to make filament.
Cut them up grind them down what ever to make them smaller is needed.
Melt (a small melting oven with temp control can do the trick) and extract thru a nozzle your new wire.
Basics are pretty simple, guide them into a "canal" of water, reel them up and print again.
