After seeing the excellent recent vids posted on this topic, I feel a bit embarressed showing this one but here goes...

Just a quick question that I can't work out and hope someone might answer....

Since I increased the size of the layout I don't get any stalling, even on the little 0-4-0, and there's less build up of 'muck' on the wheels. All the track is Piko (which I didn't clean before re-laying) and the only new bits are long straights. Any ideas?

Maybe the muck is dispersed over a larger area?

Also did you redo all the rail joints?

Nice video btw....

I think you might have got close to what's happened Gizzy... :)

I sat  looking at the railway this morning and cogitated while the Mrs was watching the wedding. I've come to the conclusion that the old one was 95% in shade (or had bosai trees close to the track) and the new one is 80% in the sun. So my theory is that the smaller track got dripped on by tree/plant sap and never had a chance to dry out, whereas the extended one is mostly open to the sun and doesn't suffer from the same problem with the result that any crud from the shaded part gets deposited on the sunny bit, dries out and falls off. Maybe a possibility??

I'd love to know if those with open, sunlit railways have less problem with track cleaning than those which are under some geenery cover.
