This isn't as easy as I hoped, so my planned article didn't happen
However this thread,originally put on GSM, gives some good guidelines for anyone wondering how old that prospective purchase or treasured item really is.

Thanks for the guide Neil, its pretty useful. I think I've managed to deduce that my steam tram is from sometime between 1975 to early 80s. I knew it was older model, didn't think it was that old though.

This kind of reminds me of my 1976 BMW 2002. I had to have the serial number whenever I got parts for it - the model year wasn't enough. Seems that BMW made all sorts of running changes back then, so the serial number was sometimes critical to getting the right part. I ended up memorizing the number (2740130) which I will probably always have (I sold the car three years ago).
