Hello Folks
Just bought an old LGB plastic girder bridge (5060) which I am going to repaint. Is it safe to clean it up by putting it the dishwasher i.e. will it warp with the heat?

I would wash it with warm soapy water by hand myself....
 
Scrubbing brush should do it William!

Another suggestion is to use a jet washer if you have access to one?

I cleaned my LGB track with one after a sewage leak, and it didn't do it any harm....

I would suggest soapy water and use an old toothbrush to get in all the nooks and crannies' then rinse off with clean water. If you use a power washer, I would be fearful that any bits blasted off in the process, would never be found again. My Son-in-Law once tried to clean his spectacles by putting them in the dishwasher, they came out looking like one of Salvador Dali's watches.

Soak it in something - washing powder - not washing up liquid - for a few hours might do the trick.

Might have to weight it down, as being plastic, it'll probably float :mm::mm:
 
Dishwasher too hot. - I reckon.
Jet washer. - Need to hold it down, and bits might fly off!

I would go for a soak in warm-hot water (as long as it is not too hot to get your hands in) with washing powder / liquid. Leave it to soak (days rather than hours), then get the Marigolds on, buy yourself a new toothbrush, and use the old one to get in those nooks and crannies.

Anyway, it should be 'weathered'.. It is a bridge. It sits in the weather! ;)
 
I'll second the idea for using an old toothbrush for getting into the nooks and crannies. The more "splayed out" the bristles, the better.
 
Clever dishwasher - mine goes 'on'.
 
Two observations Bill:

1. There are NO silly questions----only answers you don't yet know. Rule 6.

2. Believe in natural weathering, some of my non-powered rolling stock stay out all year round.
 
I can't stop my wife from putting something I've just washed in water from our hot tap that's too hot to touch, straight into the dishwasher that washes even hotter! Does that mean we were ingesting germs that could withstand the hot water from our hot tap, but now we aren't?
 
Just hand it straight to her for the dishwasher then Andrew - cut out the middle man!
