Yes, that's exactly the way I (re)started LGB collecting in 2003, Keith - with an LGB MTSII(P) starter set! Like you, I found it all worked faultlessly right from the off, and I was hooked on DCC from that point precisely because it DID just work, without me having to understand any of it.

I'm afraid I still think that many of Sarah's trials and tribulations are connected with trying to get results out of an antiquated, underpowered and barely-compatible control system..... no offence meant, Sarah, just trying to be realistic!

So, I placed my repaired; the one that John worked on; locomotive on the track. Made sure the address was set correctly, (No 2) and off she went. Two circuits later she stops. I give it a nudge but no response.

So I lift off this locomotive and replace it with one of my other ones. Re-set the address (No 1) and off she goes! Ran for a few circuits no problem so I replace that with the earlier one and again re-set the address (No 2) and off that one goes. No logic as to why.

That's an interesting result, Sarah...... I kind of wonder whether the very old decoder in the older Stainz is overheating and shutting down, then will run again after it cools a little?

Believe it or not this is how I started my garden railway. Track set out every time I wanted to run trains and put away afterwards. Had some small locomotives and no problem with the stopping and causing problems.

I started with a LGB Digital Start Set, followed the instructions, plugged it in and off I went, no problems whatsoever. Didn't worry myself about how dcc worked, I just wanted to run the trains.

Maybe everything worked because the decking was level so no ups and downs for the track.

I Think that is exactly why it all worked so well, plus probably all new track? I did the same with my early LGB but in my sitting room.

However recently I made up a portable line that I took to a friends BBQ, analogue it has to be said and automatic to boot. Worked all day laid on Grass with no problems at all. But then I maticulously ensured that all the Railjoiners were nice and tight, plus all the track was given a good scrub with the LGB Track Cleaning block till it shone. Receipe for a perfect operation.
