Coach No 13 is more or less a straight repaint of a LGB blue Zillertalbahn bogie coach.

Minimal modification was required to convert this model. The original markings were removed with fine wet or dry paper. A GRS brass lamp iron has been added to each end and the bogies have been re-wheeled using Al Kramer nickel plated turned brass wheels.

The biggest change to appearance has been achieved by the total repaint. Following a strip down the body shell, masked up doors and the seating units were given a light spray of grey plastic primer. The rest of the painting was done by brush.

After making a start on painting the seats I decided to add tables to the First class seating, using a plasticard table top supported by a cocktail stick leg.

The compartment dividing walls have raised mouldings on them to represent pictures/posters. For some reason they are asymmetrical with regard to size shape and position on the walls. I have never seen the prototype coach so must assume this to be correct. I painted these ‘picture’ areas matt white to give a bright neutral base. I then stuck on pictures cut from a colour magazine.

I have a second Zillertalbahn coach, a blue and white one, which will be identically converted to become Coach No 12.

Having declared my intention to construct/modify 14 coaches in total, for the Claptowte Railway, I was asked why I started with coach No 6 followed by No 4, and now No 13. The explanation is that, the passenger fleet is intended to comprise 3 x rakes of three coaches, each comprising a 3rd, 1st/3rd and brake 3rd vehicle. In each rake the carriage styles will be mixed, in typical narrow gauge practice, with no two vehicles being the same. There will be a Buffet Car which can be attached to any of these rakes as required. There will also be a 4-wheel Directors Coach which can also be attached to any rake. The other two remaining vehicles will be a 1st/3rd and a full brake parcels van which will run with the two Freight Stock Milk Vans to form the early morning milk/parcels train. Coaches 4, 6 and 13 just happened to be the first coaches to be modified and will comprise the first complete rake to be run as 6,13,4

If you do the maths that adds up to 13 coaches, the fourteenth will be a brake/3rd (No 3), identical to No 4 but the premise is that it has been taken out of passenger revenue service, re-liveried in Engineering Green and used as a Tool/Mess van for use with the line's travelling crane.

I must be going bonkers or losing my eyesight or both. It was only when I was reviewing this thread, and looking at the photos, that I realised that the model had moulded on handrails next to the doors, which is a no no for me. I don't know how I missed this when I was painting it.

I decided they had to go. I carved off the moulded handrails using a scalpel and cleaned up with a bit of wet or dry paper. Holes were then drilled to take brass wire handrails. Although a much publicised method of replicating rivet heads, I have never previously used it myself, blobs of white PVA glue dobbed on with the end of a cocktail stick. I was very pleased with the result and will definitely use this method again.

The last job was to touch up the paintwork
