As per the title - I know one or two folks on here have got the new 1K loco, but have any of you opened it up for DCC chipping yet? Just wondering how much room there is inside for sound decoder, speaker, power buffer etc (and maybe even a pulsed smoker!)?

The square-ish shape and fairly large side tanks make it look as though there should be a reasonable amount of room in theory, but that can be misleading once you have the ballast weights and factory circuit boards in there.....

Had a look last night. plenty of space.
A grill is pre moulded for a 57mm speaker.
A 10 pin DCC socket is provided. The XLS will fit this easily and 'G Scale Outlet' (Muns on here) says he can do an LS with the 10 pin plug for easy 'plug and play'. So I ordered one.
Pic from inside.

Plenty of space for an LS board and I can't see much problem to fit a buffer.

Thanks Alan, that's very useful. Reckon there's enough space in the smokebox for a pulsed unit?

Actually I just asked about that on a separate thread..... ;)

Probably, but I have never seen one, let alone fit it.
Smokes great as it is.

Thanks Paul - that's kind of what I expected, shame as one of these would look nice really belching smoke - though as you say, Alan, yours look like it smokes pretty well in standard form!

Thanks Paul. I don't mind a little plastic-removing surgery as long as it doesn't compromise the body strength or mountings, and it's not visible from outside.
Have you seen that new unit from Dietz, the "supplementary" pulsed smoker with twin output pipes that is meant to simulate steam from the cylinders? In a nice big loco with lots of room, like a Harz 2-10-2 maybe, one of those combined with a hi-output pulsed unit for the funnel would make an awesome setup! Not sure if it is actually out yet or "coming soon", but I'll look forward to seeing the results of someone using one!

Yes, the new Dietz unit is available from Big Train World in Holland for 109 Euros.
It looks even bigger than the Massoth unit.

A table of "easy installs" from the respective manufacturers would be helpful .

Yes, it would! However I suspect that, like the Massoth pulsed unit, that list would be embarrassingly short.... ;)

Nice to know they are actually available, thanks for the heads-up - seen any vids on youtubby or anywhere of one in operation?

Not unless you want to butcher the loco
The smoke box is too small - unless there is a big void above the screw anchor point up front.
Your right about the retaining screw Paul, but if this could be secured some otherway, i think there might be room for the pulse unit in the smoke box. When I have mine in bits again to fit the chip I'll have a measure.

Thanks Paul - yes, seen your article and the vids, all very good.... I was talking about a vid of the new Dietz "cylinder steam" unit, I'd love to see one in operation!
