Building a small 0-4-0 for my Grandson

I have now built radio control locos for all 5 of my grandkids. This is the last. He wanted a steam loco but only only had the 'diesel' motor block from a Hartland Mack available. So I had to have a 'skirted' loco to hide the lack of side rods. This is the result..

That's a great selection of locos; your grandchildren are very lucky to have such a gifted granddad as you.

I think that I like the latest one the best.

Nice job, have you seen the BW&A Railway Locomotives? Looks like a dead ringer for one of them.

Small pics of prototype in pics of the line in that link.

Lovely set of Locs for the Grandees. Nice job as ever Greg. Do not let him see the above pic, you will need to build the 2 Carriages as well!

That's a nice fleet Greg....

Great looking model, Greg. Not only that, the loco looks (and sounds) like a good performer.
Enjoyed the video of the build as well.

Cracking scratch build, doesn't suppose you could post up a few dimensions ? Only asking as you make it so seem so easy to well proportioned build locos, that it might be helpful if I ever get round to building a similar loco

Dan

Gregh, that certainly is a superb job you did on this loco and the original four. You should be very pleased with yourself.

I would like to know more about your Picaxe sound system. Being electronically challenged I have tried, in the past, to understand the building of one but haven't achieved success.

I always draw out a rough idea of what I want using Word Draw. If I have a side on pic of the prototype, I superimpose it to get the proportions right.
This is what I started with - not necessarily exactly what I built but close enough. I can then also experiment with colours and lettering layout - but in this case Josh got to choose not me!
My real concern with this loco was clearance to rail since the skirts are low and the front and rear overhangs quite long. So I mocked it up to start and ran it around my whole line in both directions before I started building the body.

Have a read of my Picaxe Tutorials here:
http://www.trainweb.org/SaTR/Picaxe tutes.htm

Tutorial 2 has 4 different steam chuff circuits and programs from simple to complicated. The 4th one "Shaping the steam chuff" is the one in Joshua.
After you've digested them, come back with your questions and I'll try to help! :)

Thanks Gregh. I'll have a look.

Greg,

Another fine build as usual, that fleet is looking really good.

Madman,

As for the sound system been there, built that, and it worked a treat, sounds really good even from across the backyard.

For someone who is programming illiterate but a bit electronic savvy (ie I can solder and know which components are which) the tutorial was easy to follow and a couple of questions to Greg and all was sorted..

That's me, programming illiterate. I'm also not up to speed on electronics symbols, etc. I've been looking to see if the local high school offers electronics classes for toddlers, which would be about where I would need to start.

Dr Google is your best friend just look for electronics 101 or made easy and you will pick it up quickly.

Will do, thanks.
