About Bowaters Models

Bowaters Models is a small UK Model Railway company owned and run by Jon Reeves specializing in 4mm Scale 3D Printed Products and 16mm Scale Garden Railway Kits. Bowaters Models released its first kit in March 2015 initially focusing on the rolling stock of the Bowaters Paper Railway. The Current Active and Planned Range includes models from the Bowaters Paper Railway, Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, Chattenden & Upnor Railway, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways and the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad.

Examples of our current/upcoming Range:-

BMS Series - Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad

As things progress, things start to grow. And Bowaters Models is no different! We're starting to look beyond our current range and starting to look at other Prototypes. As such, we're starting work on the next range to follow on from our Ffestiniog, Chattenden & Upnor and Sittingbourne Ranges.

As such, we're pleased to announce our 2018/2019 range which will see us working on a Maine Two Footers Range in 16mm scale! Focusing on the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes, we've selected a range of 2 Coaches, 7 different Freight Cars and 3 Cabooses which will form the initial range allowing a wide mix of Sandy River trains to be run. The Range at present consists of the following items:-

BMS-001 SR&RL Combine No.15
BMS-002 SR&RL Coach No.19/20
BMS-101 SR&RL 24ft Box Car No.55-66
BMS-102 SR&RL 28ft Box Car No.100-108
BMS-103 SR&RL 28ft Box Car No.121-125
BMS-104 SR&RL 24ft Dairy Car No.59
BMS-201 SR&RL 24ft Flat Car/Pulpwood Car/Coal Car No.200-210
BMS-202 SR&RL 28ft Flat Car/Pulpwood Car/Coal Car No.350-362
BMS-203 SR&RL 33ft Flat Car/Pulpwood Car/Coal Car No.363-387 ~ Eustis Railroad
BMS-301 SR&RL Caboose No.551
BMS-302 SR&RL Caboose No.551
BMS-303 SR&RL Caboose No.553

At the moment, this range is at the design stage and is progressing well. We have extended plans for this range to cover a wide range of Sandy River Prototypes so if there are any particular Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes items of Rolling stock you would like to see, let us know!

We envisage these items of rolling stock being suitable for both 32mm and 45mm gauge track. They will also in accordance with new policy, be supplied complete with bogies and couplings. These items will be to 16mm scale (1:19) and will fit in perfectly with the Roundhouse Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Baldwin.

If you are interested in any part of this range, please contact us via e-mail at info@bowatersmodels.co.uk to register your interest.

BME-001/BME-002 Battery Electric Locomotives

DSC0079.jpg

Bowaters Models is proud to reveal our latest/upcoming releases. A pair of Battery Electric Battery Electrics! Something we’re not aware has been done in 16mm before by a kit designer. We have two options, one Freelance (released) and one prototypical (on the way and hopefully due by the end of October). The Prototypical BEV is based on the Bowaters Railway ‘The Tank’ while the Freelance one is a modification of this design. The Freelance engine runs on an IPE Chassis while the prototypical engine will run on a TBC chassis. The Freelance engine is 32mm only and the Prototypical is both 32mm/45mm compatible.

Both our kits will pull 2-4 of our Pulp Wagons or 1-2 of our staff coaches depending on weight which is exactly what the prototype was able to pull (our end goal). Minimum radius is 2ft 6inches for the Freelance engine and TBC for the prototypical. These kits are perfect for both general Garden Railway use and to run with the SKLR/Bowaters Range we sell ourselves.

The Range consists of the following items:-
  • BME-001 Bowaters Paper Railway ‘The Tank’
  • BME-002 Freelance Battery Electric
The range is designed to be easy to assemble while still producing a scale model for operation with the various 16mm Live Steam and Battery Electric SKLR items of Motive Power and rolling stock. As per our new policy, these items are available complete with chassis and couplings in the gauge of your choice and couplings.

Newly announced at Sittingbourne, we are also working on 3 other locomotive kits.

IMG_0883.jpg

BME-003 is a Bagnall 0-6-2T based on the prototypes that operated on the Bowaters Paper Railway. We will be modeling 'Superb' although the kit will be designed to enable Alpha and Triumph to be modeled as well. We are aiming to have suitable etched nameplates available for the 3 engines as part of the kit. The engine will be able to run on 32mm & 45mm track and is to 16mm scale. This kit is at the Research stage with design work due to start shortly.

Test-Build-12092017-final-small.jpg

BME-004 is a Vulcan 0-4-4RT Forney based on the prototype that operated on the Monson Railroad. We will be modeling Number 3 which is preserved today at the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad. The engine will be able to run on 32mm track (we are working on 45mm as well) and is to 16mm scale. This engine is at the design stage with the mechanical work currently underway.

BME-005 is a Baldwin 2-4-4T Forney based on the prototype that operated on the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad. We will be modeling number 9 which sadly didn't survive the scraping of the railroad. The engine will be able to run on 32mm & 45mm track and is to 16mm scale. This kit is at the Research stage with design work due to start once BME-003 and BME-004 have been completed/released.

BMU Series - Chattenden & Upnor Railway Coaches

DSC0035.jpg

Bowaters Models is proud to reveal our latest release. A pair of Chattenden and Upnor Railway Coaches which are modeled in their current operating condition on the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway. With little work, these kits can be made to look as they did when operating on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway in the late 1960s to mid-1970s.

The Range consists of the following items:-
  • BMU-000 ~ A Multipack of 3 coaches (2 BMU-001s and 1 BMU-002)
  • BMU-001 ~ Chattenden and Upnor Railway Coach 196/200
  • BMU-002 ~ Chattenden and Upnor Railway Coach 199
The range is designed to be easy to assemble while still producing a scale model for operation with the various 16mm Live Steam and Battery Electric SKLR/Welshpool items of Motive Power. The Coaches are designed to run on both 32mm and 45mm track with a minimum radius of 3ft. As per our current policy, these items are available complete with bogies in the gauge of your choice and couplings.

BMF Series - Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways

DSC0049.jpg

Bowaters Models are proud to announce our Ffestiniog Railway Corridor Stock Range of kits for 16mm scale Garden Railways. The range will consist of 5 coaches all covering 5 members of the Ffestiniog Railway Operational Fleet circa 2016. The Range includes a range of coaches allowing anything from a 2 to 7 coach train to be created using the range as its basis. The 5 kits include all 3 'Carnforth' Coaches as well as 4 different Barns. The entire range is representative of the Coaches as they were operating during 2016 on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways. BMF-005 is externally representative of Ffestiniog Railway Coach No.106/107 however it uses the same interior as BMF-002. This will change as of October 2017.

The range is designed to be easy to assemble while still producing a scale model for operation with the various 16mm Live Steam and Battery Electric Ffestiniog Railway items of Motive Power. The Coaches are designed to run on both 32mm and 45mm track with a minimum radius of 5ft although the bogies can be moved outwards towards the ends of the coaches to decrease the minimum radius significantly.

As with all our current products, the kits come complete with Accucraft Chopper Couplings along with IP Engineering Large Bogies in the gauge of your choice. Both items can be removed from your kit at your request.

The Range consists of the following kits:-

BMF-000 Ffestiniog Railway Multipack – (1 each of BMF-001 and any 3 coaches from the rest of the range)
BMF-001 Ffestiniog Railway Observation Coach No.102
BMF-002 Ffestiniog Railway All 3rd Coach No.105
BMF-003 Ffestiniog Railway Composite Coach No.112/113
BMF-004 Ffestiniog Railway Buffet Coach No.114
BMF-005 Ffestiniog Railway Composite Coach No.106/107

Please note, it is our longer term plan to cover the Majority of the Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland Railway Modern Passenger Fleet as the technical data we require becomes available. We will have more information on this at Exeter.

We have more on the way which we haven't listed here as well as others that are already released. To view the whole range, please visit our website. We will update this thread as releases come up based on our press releases.

Kind Regards,

Jon, Bowaters Models.

Wow.
Love the little battery electric.

One of two interesting items there...

Not sure if I am being blind, or thick? - Possibly both!!

I am not able to find an email address, or contact details on the Bowaters webby-site..

Is this an over-site?

The email is there in a footer. Info 'at' bowatersmodels.co.uk

First of our announcements for Exeter. We will be doing 6 in total running up to the show!

800px-Bodysgallen_south_of_Rhyd_Ddu.jpg

To go alongside our range of FR Coaches, we will also be producing a range of Welsh Highland Railway Coaches! This will be a range of 7 kits covering the majority of the WHR fleet. As with our FR coaches, these will be scale models (16mm) and will be designed from the outset to operate on both 32mm and 45mm track. Please note, at this time, we will not be producing the Observation coaches. If demand dictates otherwise, we will consider it. We don't have a release date set for this model but it will follow on from our Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Freight stock range therefore in the 2018/2019 timeframe. Research is underway and we expect to start design work once our Bowaters Bagnall is complete.

The Range consists of the following kits:-

BMH-000 Welsh Highland Railway Multipack (Details to be confirmed)
BMH-001 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2021/2022
BMH-002 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2040/2041/2042
BMH-003 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2043/2044/2045
BMH-004 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2046/2047
BMH-005 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2090
BMH-006 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2011
BMH-007 Welsh Highland Railway Coach 2115 ‘Bodysgallen’

Next Announcement! BMF-011 to BMF-013 Ffestiniog Railway Tin Cars!

FR_Carriage118.jpg

Yes, that's right. We are covering the now withdrawn Tin Cars as well! These 3 kits will cover 117-121 in the condition they last operated(or in 120's case, is still operating) on the Ffestiniog Railway. All 3 kits are 16mm scale and like the rest of our range can run on both 32mm track and 45mm track. These kits make use of 2 of our 3D printed end sections to produce the unique roofs these coaches had in service. However, as a result, these coaches will be the most expensive in the range at £110 each. They are currently awaiting the next prototyping slot (which will become free after Exeter (subtle hint about what else is on the way!)) after which we aim to have them out by the end of this year/early next year. Please note, the current BMF Multipack will not include these coaches. A variant of these will become available when the coaches are released.

Now some will have noticed a gap in the product codes. We shall reveal all at a later date!!!!

Annoucement Number 3 - SKLR Preservation Coaches

IMG_0800-Copy.jpg

After our very successful trip to the SKLR end of season gala, we are starting work on a set of SKLR Passenger Coaches. These will be modifications of our existing Bowaters Passenger Coaches into their current day variants as operating on the preserved railway. We will be covering coaches 657, 659 and 660 with representative interiors. These will be 16mm scale and will match the existing coaches we produce. We already have coach 641 as running today in our range hence it not being included in this release. We will update our website after Exeter to reflect the new coaches being produced. These are ready to order now so drop us a line if you are interested!

Announcement Number 4 - Bowaters Paper Railway Battery Electric 'The Tank'

IMG_0982.jpg

We're pleased to unveil the second of our two Battery electrics which is now complete. This is the prototype version of our Freelance Battery Electric, The Bowaters Paper Railway 'The Tank'. This 0-4-0BE is designed to operate on either 32mm or 45mm track with 4 wheel drive thanks to a fantastic RTR chassis from PDF Models. This kit will be priced at £70 including couplings and the chassis in the gauge of your choice. For those who want another gauge, let us know and we will see what we can do.

We've got one more annoucement on the way and it will be a big one. Stay tuned to see what we're on about!

Announcement 5! Additional New FR Modern Corridor Coaches!

BMF-006 to BMF-010 Ffestiniog Railway Modern Coaches

DSC0121.jpg

Yes, time to fill in the gap. We are pleased to reveal another 5 coaches for our FR range including a second Observation coach and the Prototype Tin Car. The 5 kits cover a range of coaches and complete the 'pre superbarn' set of coaches except for Observation Coach No.100 (second) and Service Car No.124. These will follow later having been assigned product codes BMF-014 (Coach 100) and BMF-015 (Coach 124) alongside our Tin Cars. They are both complete design wise and awaiting the next prototyping slot. As with the rest of the range, these will be scale models (16mm scale) and suitable to run on both 32mm and 45mm gauge track. Prices will be between £82.50 (Normal Coaches), £95 (Observation 123) and £110 (Tin Car No.110). As per our standard policy, these kits will come complete with couplings and bogies in the gauge of your choice (32mm or 45mm).

Shown are the completed prototype for Coach 116, the almost Completed Prototypes for Coaches 110 & 123 and the semi-complete Prototypes for Coaches 22 and 104. We're aiming to have them all complete and on show at Exeter. Please note, the images were taken mid-construction so the final products do not reflect the images shown.

This completes our announcements for Exeter. Come and say hello to see our latest prototypes for yourself.

To view the entire FR coach range, visit our website:- http://www.bowatersmodels.co.uk/fr-modern-coaches/

Superb range of Kits and reasonably priced as well. Now if only they were to attack some German Harz NG Railcars and Wagons I would ba a happy bunny. I expect there would also be a lot of interest in similar French Productions as well. Plus perhaps Belgium Vicinal where one of the Steam Trams could be added to the list of desirable Stock.

Fair play to Bowaters - while it's not my scene (modelling wise) here is an excellent range of stock from a currently operating railway :clap::clap::clap::clap:

.............and plenty of appropriate locos available from other sources :nod::nod:

Look forward to seeing the stand at Exeter.
Although, like Ian (Rhino) the current products would not have direct links to what I model, it is still great to see what is out there for other themes.
Some of the Sandy River rolling stock may make the basis for some good kitbashing for use on other US lines.

If only!

Taliesin, Mountaineer, Criccieth Castle and Linda all made by Roundhouse, all discontinued. FR Lindas rarely come up for sale and go for "silly money" when they do.

NGG16 produced by Accucraft, now discontinued, and also in the "silly money" category when they come up for sale.

No Fairlies or England 0-4-0s produced in commercial numbers (i.e. all limited production and/or "one offs"), and none in current production.

Vale of Ffestiniog produced by DJB Engineering, but discontinued many years ago.

What does that leave? Harlech Castle (which has only worked one passenger train as far as I am aware), Lilla from Roundhouse (but rarely seen hauling main line passenger stock), LYD from Accucraft, K1 soon available from Accucraft/Anything Narrow Gauge, Caernarfon Castle as a "scratch aid" kit from Worsley Works,

New FR/WHR locos are a bit thin on the ground, and the second-hand market is where most are now.

Oh, did an Uncle Bulgaria on that one - behind the times :nerd::nerd::nerd:

Like most production these days - its done in a batch. If you want one, get one - now.
As for cash flow - your on your own matey.

As we have been discussing here in another thread, volumes are low, so the chance of a batch to sell just a few just ain't going to happen.

Though I would think you are onto a 'banker' with FR/WHR outline loco's??

True Phil, but a second batch???
