Boiler for a Garrett Build (or ideas for one!)

Hi My Dad has built a lot of model boats in his time. He is now building a garrett for my railway. It will be a 0 6 2 2 6 0 with the motion and power bogies of a lgb german mallett. But probably scratch buil cylinders.

I have offered him a matt black bachmann 4 6 0 boiler but it isnt right. Anyone have or can think of a beefy boiler? Garrets for some reason rarely have a taper which is what looks wrong on the one I have now....

This is my Garrett i bought along with a number of other home made locos... its clear its unfinished and i will get round to doing it ....:rolf:
Anyway it has 2 lgb 2085D blocks and is made from plasticard (i have the cab roof) the boiler is 2.5" waste pipe you are more than welcome to borrow it to take measurements etc or i can take some better pics tomorrow....if you click on the picture it should take you to my photobucket page where there are some more photos if it doesnt let me know

Hi,

As Tony says Beyer Garratts have simple and large boilers, and if required large fireboxes and ashpans, depending on what sort of fuel they used.

If you have a local builder see if he has any bits of pipe that you can use, as to buy some if needed (you may have some ??) is rather wasteful, unless you intend to build a fleet of them(grin) !

Think of the boiler on the sole LNER one - that boiler was to the limit of the loading gauge I think. You could fit it with a Giesel chimney if you are making a modern one: the East African RR;s fitted some and they were very good. You could also add the 'streamlined' tank and bunker

Here is a good site for ideas ?http://users.powernet.co.uk/hamilto...k/main/Beyer Peacock Garratt Locomotives.html < Link To http://www.beyerpeacock.c...att%20Locomotives.html

Not mentioned are the enormous Australian ones - the AD60's they have nbeen mentioned on GSC, but 'Mr Google' will also assist re them. There is an Aster? kit of them

Finally a model of the AD60 is shown at the following link http://www.modelrailforum.com/forums/index.php?autocom=custom&page=Eureka-AD60-Garratt < Link To http://www.modelrailforum...ge=Eureka-AD60-Garratt

Looks like a interesting project Ian keep us posted with the build

The boiler is best made from a section of plastic drain pipe and plastic sheet. There are plenty of smokebox door and chimney castings around to make the detail easier or you could use an LGB shorty smokebox as that is fat enough.

Hi. 3 inch downpipe (drainpipe) would make a nice hefty piece. Your local diy or builders merchant might an offcut available. I'm in the process of building one (that does have a tapered boiler!). I've used parts from 3 Bachmann Baldwins and ended up with a double pacific 4-6-2+2-6-4. I've only joined this forum tonight and am not that technologically advanced and haven't yet worked out if I can add a photograph but if you go to Gavin Hamilton's The Garrett Locomotive website and look at the non-commercial model Garretts page you'll find a pic at the very bottom.
