Hello,
I just got a Bachmann Big Hauler locomotive, tender and caboose from eBay and the chuff sounds are far from realistic, it's more of an 8-bit computer game sound. I'm assuming this isn't normal so if anyone has any answers as to what I should do, please let me know. I'm new to G-scale but have modeled in HO for years and belong to a club in the Bay Area. I bought the set so my grandkids could play with trains I wouldn't be too worried about. Thanks!

Which model, is it track or battery power.

Thanks Greg. I bookmarked that site and others before the set was delivered. I'll check it out.
There are some cheap and simple tips there to improve the chuff ................ a bit. You can get it to have a clearer 'bark, and slightly better volume. I've used a few Big hauler boards for cheap sound by giving them the George Schreyer treatment :nod:

It's battery powered, 6 D cells. The motion is fine but the stuffing sounds like an 8-bit Atari game!
Hm are the wheels plastic? If so likely a very early one and the sound then was pretty naff, I had one of the very first ones imported to the U.K. now rebuilt as an Irish 2-6-0 using the original sound and yes it is still naff compared to current day products. A good option to improve would be to fit a My Loco Sound (MLS) Board in it but not quite sure how you would do that.

Perhaps just remove original speaker wires and use for the MLS sound if speaker spec ok. Then wire MLS to motor and power terminals?

I have one (now converted) and the sound was not worth listening to.

I put a MLS in mine, and although bought an upgraded speaker, left the original in place as the sound was much improved, and good enough for me.

Thanks to all that replied with fixes. I was able to purchase a new in box (old stock with KayBee $79.99, marked down from $99.99 price tag!) from Trainz.com It was complete with all the add-ons (utility poles, coaling shed, crossing gates and other signs) for less that $100 and then ship it from Georgia. The sound is 100% better than the first one I purchased. I will probably give the other set to my grandsons, hokey sound and all.

If you decide to improve the sound then instructions for installing a MyLocoSound soundcard in Bachmann locos are here
