Another car out of the shops to make up the freight consist for the railroad for use with the bigger locos,(still loads of 1;22 to hand) but I have loads of unused lettering and numbers not used on C&RG stock bashes so why not bring back some of my old fallen flag defunct railroads from the dark and distant past and at least give them trackage rights on the C&RG and use up some decals?
So about 20years ago I built a small railroad, the Arizona Southern, now long gone and so thought one car at least could be built from the old line...and where else would I use some "Z"s up?:D.Donor car was a Bachmann item and I used the chassis frame, trucks, grab rails and roof walk from the old car, new custom body knocked up, new working couplings added with working cut bars, the brake wheel from the old car was cut off near the top of the molding, turned over and super glued into some brass tube raising the height and looking a little more prototypical, the corner steps are the roof clip "rings" from the old roof, cut off with a razor saw and just glued into position, three coats of colour, lettering added then sealed with matt varnish and when dry a wash of the body colour to fade back the lettering, not weathered just aged,,,,as an afterthought I may have been a little light on the max load weight but heyho!!!!..before someone asks what a Type 2 brake is, its better than a Type 1 and not as good as a Type 3!!!!!!!!1;););):D.so now on with the next one ,possibly a reefer. Really nice looking conversion. Is there just point in trying to salvage anything from the old body, or is it just that badly out of scale? I'm considering downscaling everything to F scale.

Thanks, the cars I am bashing are from 1;22 up to 1 ;20 (ISH) to run behind Connie and k27,the 1;22 cars to me look a little small, still have many 1;22 cars to play with,,,,,,,I mean run;);).Besides getting hold of 1;20 Spectrum cars now is hard so decided to bash some,a little short in length but on a small railroad they look just fine.

Another car through the shops and from another fallen flag railroad from past modelling layouts over the years and I can use up some more decals, this time some "X".The Phoenix & Casa Grande lives again, only couplings, cut bar chain to add to finish and a quick wash over the lettering to fade it back a little.Next car in the shops,,,,,,tank car.IMG_20220129_162814.jpgIMG_20220129_162828.jpgIMG_20220129_162910.jpgIMG_20220129_163008.jpgIMG_20220129_162915.jpg

Yes Mick, prices on 1;20 stuff is eye watering and rare now,one reason to bash, mine are not Spectrum or AMS detailed but great fun to build and that`s what it`s all about and the shorter cars don`t look at all bad on the small railroad.;););).I used the caboose for width and height measurements and went from there:D.Tank cars are easier as I just beef up and widen the frame leaving the tank "as is".

The second tank car now almost completed and a third in the shops now but that one will be a CONOCO labelled car,Otis Oil was named after one of our moggies we lost last year but still keeping the name in the little fella`s memory and SW insisted !
The frames have been widened and beefed up to look heavier and of course re lettered(some more to go on)but the tanks not changed and are "out of the box", after the next tank being worked on now a reefer is sitting in a box all ready to be torn apart.;);););) It was a sunny day so took them outside to check the cut bar chains were long enough so the coupling didn`t break on the curves, all`s well there.:clap:IMG_20220202_090453.jpgIMG_20220202_090516.jpg

Yep, 1:20 is the way to go, as the 45mm track becomes a scale 3ft with that true narrow gauge look.

It was a Connie that started me off down that route, and I've never regretted it, even with the shortage of available stock, and the cost of the stuff. Having said that, I haven't resorted to buying a new wagon for a few years, and the most I paid back in the day (except for an imported Accy caboose) was £85. (I did pay a bit more for a brass caboose, but then that's brass ;);) )

I`m still using 50/50 0f 1;20 & 1;22,I would like to go all 1;20 but a rack of 1;22 locos in the collection, now 5 Big Haulers as an example so the plan is to have different running days......all adds to the fun ;);) I got the brass caboose............then the Bachmann turned up, ended up with both:D

No 3 tank now well under way, just a couple of things to do for completion, ladders back on ,cut chains and so on, I simplified the lettering but happy with that(the joy of freelancing)finished off with some dry brushing to fade back the lettering and then finished with a "dirty varnish", just a pot with drops of various colours added in very small amounts, just gives a hint of age and use but not fully weathered, some spill on the dome too. I knew those larger letters would get some use somewhere!:D;);),2 Gramps cars still 1;22 around somewhere too.Now there is another car, a reefer sitting in a box ready to be torn apart for the next car, maybe another flat? I think this will be the last freight car, another flat car this one has the stake pockets where the first one just has a plain deck, just a couple of little things to finish it off, some stakes for example, it started life as a reefer, plenty of spare hand rails and roof walks for the spares boxIMG_20220220_082430.jpgIMG_20220220_155530.jpgIMG_20220220_155544.jpgIMG_20220220_155558.jpg;)
