1495369010987-815121555.jpg Just getting started on this long delayed build (receipt says 5 years). 2nd hand AMS coach now dismantled and work started on roof. Should be fun. The kit appears very well made, like other Rio Grande UK models. Might be asking a couple of questions, like - What does the interior of the cupola area look like and what clour should the interior be ? Testors Floquil Railroad colours paint - can normal enamel thinners be used ?al

14960581025191600488369.jpg The sides are built. There are over 60 parts in each of them. You would not think so to look at them. Interior has been modded. A few spare seats. Next tlhe celestory then the cupola. Wondering wether to detail the cupola interior. I have a Hartfod caboose with a fully detailed interior I could copy (& the Bachmann Spectrum items that have removable roofs so on can have a good gander). Max

VERY nice job there. Sorry that they seem to have priced themselves into oblivion here in UK.

OOOOOOOOh now that is a nice bit of modelling Max.
That car will definitely look the couilles de le chien
I do like the 'Rio Grande Models UK' stuff.
I have a couple of their kits built. A grey and a brown version of the water service car.
The white metal parts are very delicate just like those on the 'Hartford Products' kits that I have built.

These are their pictures, my models are stored at the moment

I do like their stuff too. Built one of their Gunnison snow plows, very effective. I have not been able to get hold of him for a while, I ordered a kitchen car and heard nothing more. Pity. Not cheap but always worth it for the quality in my mind.

Well, now there is a bleddy big hole in the roof. I suppose I am going to have to find a way to fill it. A bit of proper modeling to do, I hope my limited skills are up to it :(

There's MEANT to be a hole in the roof. That's how the conductor climbs up into the cupola to watch the train and control HIS end of the air brakes if needed....

But of course, you knew that, right?

Internal colours for a cupola are usually some shade of light green - easy on the eyes in the sun glare.

PS - Rio Grande Models UK went down the pan years ago. A pity, but with the base model that you cut up hitting £300, and another £250 for the kit - plus craftsman-level building skills - they were never going to sell a million items. Great shame, too, as we can plainly see, their stuff was wondrous.

Strange thing the kit makes no mention to cut a hole but it seemed churlish not to. There seems a paucity of information on what the interior was like. Despite the availability of well detailed short and long D&RGW cabeese to base from I am swaying towards replicating a Hartlands caboose interior I built a while back

Wow, Tac, prices have gone up. Got the C&S combine, 2nd hand like new with ball bearing convesion in box, for 140 Sovs and the kit for 150. Ok it was 5 years ago.

Upstairs crew and some rum types as passengers selected. Max

You asked me about internal colours for the cupola, and you already had the internal colours. Why was that?

It may not be green perhaps. And it was a general question to all as to the layout of this particular car. Googling provides little information. Max.

And a little bit more is done. Next the interior, including the cupola, gets worked on. Then, its a strip down, its all dry fit and screws right now, and the painting and decaling begins. Max.

rio grande models never went pop,,,,, dave the owner had too much on with his garden center so he had to stop
as he had little time to put into the train side

and although he is closed he told me everything is still available from his site except the gunnison plough
but he needs to have an order for 6 or 7 items to make use of the sheet materials

me and a pal got a run of coach 300 and 292 a couple of years ago,,,

if anyone wants anything let me know and we can try and get another run together
prices are probably 30 percent higher now to make but the product is very very good

Would love to get a kitchen car. Just the bits or a built one.

Yes, 215 is big. It's around 68 cm over the knuckles. Getting carried away with the interior now. Found some info on a couple of other builds that includes some data and interior photos of 215 post cupola. One is of a RGM UK kit build, another a total scratch build. Saloon area looks like a bit of dark wood stain is in order. The baggage area and cupola a washed out green. I've ditched the plastic floor for wood and have made up a divider, with door, between saloon and baggage end. Max

Smashing build there! Looks pretty solid for a dry fit. Shows that you get what you pay for

1:20.3, aka Fn3 or if you wish - the biggest darn things you can bung on a 45 mm gauge track (OK the 7/8ths brigade might dispute that. Anyone for a 1:13.7 NGG16)
