Hi all, so I've got a bit of a project ongoing currently and would like to add some sound to it, but wondering if its even a possibility.
As a bit of background, its a Class 08 shunter in 7 1/4inch ride on gauge, powered by a large Pulsed Width Mod controller (150 amp!!) I have seen a sound system which I think used a DCC chip as the sound source, but has been out of production for several years.
Is there away of making use of a chip in this way?
Ideally, I'd want to use an ESU chip, and could probably use its on boards inputs to fire up the engine noise, and sound horns etc, but how can I get the engine noise to rev up and down in relation to the motor voltage?
Any help, ideas or info related to this would be greatly helpful.

Suitable units for this use are marketed. I suggest a word with Keith McDonald of Phoenix Locos, I'm sure he will be able to give some guidance.

I to would recommend Phoenix Sound for this.. They are mostly American outline, but they do a mean Class 66, amongst others. You can hear samples on the website..
The cards are not cheap, and you really need the programming module to change things. - Though you will find that I and others can do this part for you. ;D
A genuine 3W output 'as is' means you can often get away without extra amplification. - Lots of space for a decent speaker setup at 7 1/4 scale. ;) ;D

Hi Andy,

Have a look here:

scroll down under the general tips section and you'll see there is a .pdf for ride-on trains with lots of diagrams and info.

Hi Keith, many thanks for that link! Next question, do you know anyone who does an 08 sound project as the files listed appear to be all of none UK loco's... I do know somebody who can program sound into a phoenix unit, but I don't think he does his own sounds though.

Hi Andy,

Sorry can't help you with the sounds...but do you know what kind of engine is in it? Cummins? Cat?

Keith

It may be worth contacting Brian Jones.
I have found him very helpful. Sadly whilst he specialises in U.K. sounds he doesn't appear to list a class 08.

coastaldcc and digitrains have created class 08 sound files for zimo dcc chips and soth west digital have sound files for ESU loksound, maybe worth contacting them.

You can also use MyLocoSound soundcards with an amplifier which can be purchased from your local consumer electronics store. These are powered by your loco's 12v or 24v DC supply and connect to the motor terminals. The soundcard reads the motor back emf so the engine sound is speed and load dependent and is adjustable to suit the loco. Other sounds like horn, bell, guard's whistle and brake release are triggered by pushbutton or using the remote control we supply. Installation is covered in our instructions. If you are in the UK, please contact Peter Spoerer Model Engineers for information.
