This new edition to Accucraft/Maxitrak's lineup appeared at Llangollen earlier this year - a nifty-looking diesel as used on the huge Australian sugar production farms - take a look on Youtube to see these busy little locos in action, and scratch your head to see the 'shunting by rope'...

I've ordered my two-motor version as a kit, in maroon, and will be 'colouring it in' to have a similar appearance to the Kambarka-built 400hp loco found there.

Lots of scope for the products of the likes of SLR 3D models, and yes, we have discussed likely items.

Anybody else had an interest?

Details filched with thanks from the Accucraft/Maxitrak site - thank you , Alex and Andy.

These engines were constructed by EM Baldwin and sons of Castle Hill, New South Wales, Australia. The company supplied smaller locomotives for industry from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. Designs included shunting, mining and tunnel locomotives but the most common surviving engines were built for the Queensland sugar industry. At this time the extensive 2ft gauge lines were changing from steam to diesel traction. EM Baldwin built a large number of the replacement diesels to a continuously evolving design, to the extend that there are hardly two alike. Engines and gearboxes varied depending on power requirements and suppliers delivery dates etc.

The usual sugar industry livery was bright yellow with red and white striped buffer beams, many enjoyed further enhancement with coloured stripes and panels giving the modeller many opportunities to customise the standard colour scheme. Many of these engines are still hard at work in the cane-cutting season and form the backbone of the largest surviving 2ft gauge industrial railway system in the world.

The model features an all steel bonnet, chassis and full cab and incorporates the distinctive E.M Baldwin makers plates. Constructed with moulded and 3D printed parts to give an enhanced level of detail, including LED lighting set

True, but at least it'll keep you quiet for a while building them all!

I have a better idea. Seeing that Brecon Mountain Railway has a russian-built [Kambarka Engineering] 400 hp diesel, in maroon with a nice grey cab and hood top, I bethought me that I'd like to commemorate the heroism of Miki Endo-san, who sacrificed herself during the Japanese tsunami to carry on sending out warnings, even as the waves went over her head. I'm having nameplates made, along with a single black chrysanthemum plaque. Buying the kit means that getting the paint in the right places will be a doddle.

I have contacted our local OZ distributor re the availability of this loco and a 'Mini Planet'.
He has contacted Maxitrak to ascertain costs so will wait and see.
The R/C option would seem appropriate for my purposes but it would all depend on overall cost.
cheers

I'd be interested to know the cost, too. Given that the prices are on the Accucraft newsletter a few months back, that ought not to be a problem.

I guess you are talking about the large scale versions, rather than the 5" gauge?

Yes, I have a 5"g Planet plus have just sold my 5"g Drewry shunter as I wasn't using it as much as I would have liked.
I received the current UK prices and other details from Maxitrak by email an hour or so ago and just waiting for the local distributor to get back to me so I can see if the numbers add up.
I probably don't need another garden railway loco but......

Cheers, Ian
