5inch "Live steam, electric diesel" anyone?!

yeah saw that one!

Actually looks like quite a fun bit of kit, but no way could I justify it (or store it)!

Thinks, I could sell the G scale, buy this and get a new car with the change!!

Anton that looks incredibly ambitious.
I was surprised to see you using aluminium wheels. (Turning them from scratch is something else!)
Will they be up to the wear?

Hi Keith

Ambitious in a good way? :p

And im sure they will be fine. If not they ill soon know...

Im strugling with what genirator motor to use and what traction motor to use, as i have been in contact with a guy on youtube who built this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgB9qsEqpEc&feature=channel_video_title
And he uses a 36 volt 250 watt generator motor and a 24v 125 watt traction motor.

As he used a 2stroke strimmer motor, he produced the rpm to get power off the generator. As i am using a suffolk 4stroke, which has fare less rpm, so im not sure if i will get the desired power.

Regards
Anton

It's out of my area of experience Anton but presumably the 4 stroke will have more power than a 2 stroke of similar capacity and will be able to handle a gearbox to increase the output revs.

It's the torque of the engine that counts in a direct drive, the strimmer engine would not have the oomph to pull away without a slipping clutch of some sort but the four stroke motor would just walk away.

.... but the noise!

Well i guess its just going to have to be a trail and error project. Im wondering whether to get both motors with a higher WATT rating, as they will then produce more power. I know this will create more resistance for the Suffolk to turn, but being a fourstroke it should be able to handle it. I planned to get a 36v 250 watt (generator) and a 24v 120 watt (traction motor), as that is what the guy in the above video link used. As i am using a bigger engine and 4 stroke, im guessing i could increase the wattage of the motors to create more power, as the loco will be extremely heavy anyway, having an pretty much all steel and iron construction (except wheels).

Any thoughts?

Regards
Anton

if (looking like a big if at the mo) I had a big garden/paddock I'd get one. although I would probably end up banished as SWMBO would think this eccentricty to far...

Too far? Impossible! Merely a little, er, umm, how can I put it? Larger :rolf:
