This is a continuation of the discussion about 18650 5Ah batteries on the Blue Batteries dimensions thread which I started. For some reason I cannot access that thread via the network in the hotel I am staying in, in the Isle of Man.

In answer to an enquiry about discharging the batteries which I read just before I left the house this morning (sorry, can't access the thread so not sure to whom I am replying) - I use an iMax B8 charger which also has a discharge setting for lipo/li-ion which allows you to specify the discharge rate. Once discharged it shows the time elapsed.

I'd include a link the the charger and its manual but web access is painfully slow here and the Google enquiry I've just made is still searching after five minutes or so.

I have asked a question re the 5Ah 18650 tagged cells on eBay. " Do you guarantee these are 5300mAh?" Nil return as yet.... Im just cynical that you could pack 5.3Ah into a cell this size, if it was reasonable then we would all be driving cars powered by Li-Ion batteries and the chinese would have devices on eBay that allow you to bypass your electricity meter for free charging.........

I saw a motorcycle on TV the other day that ran on batteries. It had a reasonable range and on performance was like that of a mid-sized bike. We WILL be driving electric cars shortly. The first charging station has already been opened in our little town. Sorry for straying off topic...

This is very strange. I thought I`d try log on to the forum first thing in the morning to see if the problem with accessing the "blue batteries dimensions" thread was something to do with excess traffic on the hotel network, but I still can`t access it. I keep getting this message
screengrab.jpg

I can access all the other threads - even those with many more posts than this thread. Maybe the blue batteries have jinxed the thread.

Is anyone else having problems accessing the "Blue batteries - dimensions" thread?

That IP address is a private address on your hotel's network. Check your browser and Windows configuration to see whether you have a proxy server configured.

How weird - all the other links work fine - something seems to have hi-jacked that address on my browser. I'll try Chrome

AFAIK Chrome and IE use the Windows network config, whereas Firefox has its own. That address ends in .1, so it's most likely the hotel's router and they run a proxy server, which somehow got configured on your PC. Remove that proxy in your network config and you should be all good - unless they force you to use it.

I'll pretend I understand ...... Just tried Chrome and the same thing happens when I try accessing that link - sends me to the same address. When I open the browser it takes me to the hotel network's log-in page where I enter a password before I can access the www. What I can't figure out is why that particular address on GSC redirects but not the others.

Off to watch trains now - as Ross says, I'm on my holidays ........

Ahhhh sorry I may have stirred up a hornets nest. I recieved a response in Chinglish to the effect (I think) that these batteries labled 5300mAh is that the "5300mAh" is a brand of manufacture same as Starfire, Ultrafire you know friend" Naturally I sent off a complaint to eBay stating that this was false and misleading advertising and that I was aware that "Fake" batteries were being sold on eBay and they should withdraw them from sale. eBay tell me that are investigating...
Something else I note with interest is that Australia Post are endorsing the sale of these...
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lot-10-4200mAh-3-7V-18650-NCR-Li-ion-LED-Flashlight-Torch-Rechargeable-Battery-/261254765588?pt=AU_Electronics_Batteries_Chargers&hash=item3cd3ff5c14#ht_3272wt_1313

Im still cynical that you can get even 4200mAh into a 18650 cell.... I could be wrong....

Great site Ross.
The blue batteries results are quite similar to Rik's results.

The Chinese selling stuff on ebay lets them get around consumer protection legislation in your country. I think I will buy my batteries through a local supplier. It will cost more, but I will have protection well beyond any manufacturer's warranty.

Case in point: bought a new laptop battery in Germany via Ebay. 1 year later and it's as good as dead. The original lasted at least 3 years.

True.... Paypal has a 40 day period where you can get a refund.... Personally having seen how its done on Youtube I'd rebuild any battery packs from here on in with locally sourced (Jaycar) batteries where I have some claim if they are dead.... The price you have to pay for "genuine Dremel" batteries is absurd, its cheaper to buy a new tool with battery and charger....

My "5Ah" 18650s were from a UK supplier - so I think I'll pursue a claim here. Mind you, the price I paid for them, I think it's a case of 'not getting owt for nowt' (Yorkshire for caveat emptor). Mine do have vents in the cap BTW unlike the one on the website linked by Ross above.

I would have thought all the batteries have vents altho' not seen...well, I always assumed they have.......on the other hand........................
And I thought all 18650 batteries had "protection built in", I read it somewhere but Tony says the Jaycar ones are unprotected... I'll run a current test and see what happens, if it gives me more than a few amps I'd assume they are not protected.....
EDIT! from what I read "GENUINE' branded 18650s are protected, generics and fakes not necessarily so..... so "real" Ultrafire cells will be protected fake ones probably not......
