12 Sound functions not 12 functions with LGB MTS and Dimax? Starting to touch the dark art

OK, so a bit of blood, sweat and tears tonight as I start my embrace of the dark arts, and being reminded of a cartoon from Dos for Dummies where it says "You cannot break your computer" - which is not strictly correct, except you have to try really hard and almost know what you are doing to format the hard drive.

Last night I was reading about LGB Mts 3 vs Massoth, and there was an entry about LGB only allowing 12 functions per locomotive. The Navigator of course has 16 available buttons. Then I look at the Massoth XLS decoder book (version 2.5 - 01/10) page 34 - CV table (sound settings), where it talks about in the notes 1...12 = F key assignment: sound will be triggered by the respective F-key.

Does this mean 12 sounds, or 12 functions if using the Dimax Navigator?

I'm beginning to think it is 12 sounds ?
I did set CV49=2 before getting the additional sounds below, as I need to do this to get the use of the F buttons above 12? (Now seems to give me braking sounds for a while when I put the loco on the track but I can live with that).
I've just enabled the bell (F15), ticket announcement (F13) and generator (F10) on the Massoth XLS 8210100 - Small steam loco (stainz).
Having to program via the Dimax Navigator at the moment, and I assume the reason that I don't see the current CV value on the programming display is the lack of two way feedback, but I can write CV's since I'm at version 1.70 software.
Any comments from those further on in the dark arts ?

wow, where to start, as far as i am aware, all the numbered buttons on the massoth navigator are for sounds and functions, so for example if you had an electric pantograph you would press number 3 (function3) this would raise the pantograph and sound the pantograph up sound..
And if i'm not mistaken it's 12 functions/sounds.. hence the controllable panto's on some locos..

As far as reading Cv's i use the navigator just cycle through to Cv reading instead of programming.. not having a navigator means i cannot take pictures :wits:

You can only read CV's with the newer software version for the Navigator. Not sure of the version number required but I am sure someone will be along in a while who knows.

I need to have more a play around with it. Until I enable more things on the Stainz (XLS 8210100) then I can't be more specific on that. I do have another loco (27211 -DRG Black Stainz) - chipped I believe with an LGB chip and a LS sound decoder which has more (than 12) things but not more sounds:
F1 - Whistle // F2 = Brakes // F3 = 3 whistle // F4 = conductor // F6 sound on/off // F7 smoke //F8 Shunting Speed // F9 Lights // F10 Generator // F11 Waterpump //F12 Coal Shovelling // F13 Tickets please // F14 slow air pump // F15 Bell.

F5 and F16 appear not be used.

The sound datasheet for the http://www.massoth.com/dlbereich/datei.php?id=97 < Link To 8210100 will tell you all the available sounds and their default key assignents, which CVs to change to specify the key required to activate it, the volume and number of loops to play.

What central station are you using?

Hi Muns, I'm using 55006p (LGB MTs 3) but with a Dimax Navigator to change settings. The Stainz came chipped with F1 to F8 active. The sound sheet lists more, and tonights success story was was to into the Dimax program routine, and enter say CV141 and then value 15, so that the bell now works on F15. This is the default setting and F key value. Much further down track in the dark arts will be altering the F key setting, so that for example I can get the bell within the F1-8 range, so that it will work on the LGB hand controllers which I also let the kids use. SWMBO likes bells and whisltles !

Loops and volumes is further things to tinker with. In the same way that I've got my "old faithfuls" (couple of 0-4-0's) (see blog) that I pull out when I need to test if track etc works, then I think I'm going to have to decide '"which" Massoth equipped loco gets to 'volunteer' to be subject of experimentation until I'm much more conversant with what I'm doing.
