Just had this sent to me courtesy of Garden Railway magazine.
It is a model of the Japanese D51 steam loco in 1:24th scale all in brass and white metal. total cost is $115
It is supplied in 12 monthly sections and has to be soldered or glued together.
It has lights and sound but no motor.
Wouldn't it be great if they did some US locos or some European ones and then someone worked up a motorised chassis design etc....a complete fully working brass loco for maybe the equivalent of around £300.

Yes it is only 1:24th scale so that would not suit a lot of folk but for the price...... a nice project

One problem at the moment is it is only shipped to US or Canada

The way I read it, Mike, is that EACH OF THE 12 INSTALMENTS is $115...... so the complete kit costs $1380..... a much more realistic figure! ;)

Jon.

I agree with Jon: 12x $114.99 = a lot!

D51 price.jpg

.... and then it turns out to be 200 months not 12 months, like most of the part-works I`ve seen (and that my late Dad got caught up with!)

Holy cats if that was the case, 200 months is 16-1/2 YEARS :o and almost $23,000 !!! ??? ;)

Even at 12 months its too pricey a sum, too much for my wallet :'(

Dagostini has a record of starting projects that appear to cost a little, which turn out to cost a bundle. Galleons, schooners, aircraft etc. I have yet to see a completed model! The Magazines that accompany the project usuall disapear off the shelves.

I don't think they are intended for "shelves", the idea is if you like what you see in the first 2 -3 issues you start a subscription. IF enough start the subscription then it goes ahead. if not it dies.

Yeah, my old Dad got hooked with the "Build The Victory" partwork a few years back. He'd pretty much completed it before his demise and did a good job, but I reckon it must have cost him £hundreds (way more than simply buying an equivalent kit), not to mention the aggro of having to phone the distributors to get missing parts, make sure more issues were coming etc.

Never mind eh?

Enthusiasm won over observation........ :o :o

There is a 'Build the Hood' running at the moment.. We deliver one to a guy who builds these things to keep himself occupied. - Almost housebound, but bright as a spark.
He reckons it will have cost him about £800 by the time it is done.

But if it gives him pleasure, and keeps him occupied, then worth it over the time..

Let's face it, we can spend that much on our hobby in the blink of an eye (or click of a mouse). - All relative, I suppose?
