WX Creators Tips.

I've had a little more difficulty with WX Creators, so I thought I'd start this thread for folk like me who know nowt and only find out by fiddling. I know there is more than one of me on here! :giggle:

I've had a problem with WX/I.E. for some time, and I had a 'get out' before Creators. Occasionally (far too often) when I try to open a webpage from a desktop Icon, the cursor (curser? oh no that's me!) would just sit there going round and round.
I did once try leaving it to see if it did ever open, for over an hour; zilch. The only solution seemed to be a re-start, but after some 'fiddling' I came across 'Task Manager' [right click the W icon on the bottom taskbar and it's about half way up the menu] that opened a largish window with what the whole thing was up to - loads. A way down the results list (Tasks) there were two tasks for I.E one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit, I would then 'end task' for 32 bit (mine is 64) [right click the item and select option] and instantly the page would open.

Now the real tip. When it happened this time (after Creators update) when I opened 'Task Manager' it was only a little box and it said there were "No Apps running". In the bottom left corner of the window is a button for 'More Detail'. Click that and you get the full Monty again.

This isn't the only use for this function, it is just how I discovered it. It will shut down anything that refuses to shut itself. Just find the entry, and 'End Task'. Be careful shutting some of the other tasks or you might need a restart. It's called learning the hard way!

If you have any other tips, add them on.

What you've outlined are the main uses I have found for Task Manager over the years, although I find the Windows 10 version rather less easy to use than earlier versions.

I've found many things on it that seem to be running twice, like WMI Provider Host (whatever that is), and will accept being closed, but then they just open up again next switch-on.

I look at it this way (well you would with a window wouldn't you?) - we're looking out and MS is looking in.

I think it must be distorted glass then Mick. They never seem to fix the stuff we moan about.

Pestered to death by the "Manage Add-ons" banner? Simple one this, just click to manage add-ons button and then re-set the time limit in the bottom of the screen, to something like 2 secs.

I was getting it several times a day, and the only two I had were Ad-blocker and Anti-V. Sorted.

Ever since an update to WX shortly before "Creators", I've had problems with very slow back-spacing. i.e. click B/S 5 times and it would take more than 5 seconds to complete it instead of almost instant. I tried updating the keyboard and mouse drivers but to no avail, so I deleted them and re-installed, nothing seemed to fix it. Exasperated, I have sprung for a new keyboard, Logitech this time not M/S. Currently it seems to be behaving, but, as is often the case these days Google Chrome self-downloaded as soon as I plugged the new board in (plug & play), so I've had to uninstall that for about the tenth time as I wont have it on the machine as it's far too intrusive and inquisitive. That in turn returned the "Manage add-ons" banner, as Google had activated itself at 0.00 secs.

Fizzing??? You bet!!!!!

Got very confused with this thread, what on earth is WX? Then after reading a few replies I realised it was another thread on Windows 10. There is a lot on this in previous threads well worth reading to show what a crock it is (says smug Apple guy) but may well help you with your predicament with experience and some work arounds.

Please do we really need another War and Peace thread on the issues of the software that was the former Mr Gates Creation?

Well, this one I don't have a solution for -YET!

I tried this morning to download some photos directly from my camera (Nikon D3200). Never been a problem even as far back as W98 with whatever camera I've had. I never load the manufacturer's interface, I've only ever used ' This P.C'. from the desktop, picking up from Drives and Devices, always through the USB. Then copy and paste to the folder I decide they should be in. Today it goes as normal as far as opening the camera card folder, high-lighting the pics and 'copy' - and that's the end, no 'paste' or rather when I did, nothing happened. Try again - nothing. Disconnect the camera, re-start the 'puter, now it wont even find the camera, send 'Devices' to look for the camera. Zilch - Nadda - Nowt! Camera doesn't exist. I haven't downloaded any pics since before Fall Creators Update, so what is the natural assumption????

Greg. if it was a decent product it wouldn't take ANY work to make it right, it wouldn't change stuff just for the hell of it.

EDIT One hour (ish) later. I have found a cure/cause, I think????? Out of curiosity I tried my other camera and the P.C. found and read that no problem??? I changed USB sockets, No difference. Being (I hope) fairly thorough in my fault finding techniques, I noticed that the battery in the older camera was better charged than the one in the newer one, which was by no means flat or even near it, but remembering something I spotted during a net search on the problem, about running the camera off a mains adaptor (Impossible with the Nikon) whilst transferring photos, I inserted the fully charged spare. Hey presto the P.C. could now see the camera AND allow download of the pictures. I'm certain as I can be that I have not had battery problems of this nature before so am now puzzled as to the reason, or what has changed (apart for W10 again!).

I've complained for some time about slow typing speeds, but only on this site. Particularly back-deleting when it would hang up then delete one char. at a time about a second apart. I've just changed from AVG to Avast anti/v and the problem now seems to be largely eliminated. I'm also getting fewer missing letters or double strikes. I thought these things were supposed to help? Web pages are still taking forever to open, but hey what's new?

I used to use AVG, but over the years it became bloated and started eating CPU cycles, my current standard is Avast, but I don't install all the standard crap, only the first 4 check boxes in the custom install.

If you have already installed it in standard mode, you can go into settings and uninstall the other stuff, but do it through the Avast GUI.

Also, if things slow down, break out the task manager, sort the processes by top cpu usage and see what is running.

Whilst we are now a long way from the Creator's update the latest one has been playing havoc as well. Amongst a lot of other things, W Photo Viewer default removed etc. the " and @ got transposed on my keyboard. Yesterday I went into settings and thought I'd fixed it by telling use proper English. After a re-start it seemed Ok. Not so on start-up today it had reverted, another look and it seems it needs Time Zone to be set to automatic???

This constant change for changes sake and messing with P.C.s worldwide must be costing the economy Billions. I've had two sessions at curing one minor problem, total of about 1/2 an hour. Work that as an hourly rate and then multiply that by the millions of people affected . . . . . It's time M.S. paid us back!

Trouble is that Apple are at the same game, but not only us it costs Industry Millions as wel for training up when things have been changed so subtly that on Monday morning after the upgrade people have difficulties doing tasks on the PC's that they were able to do just fine before the weekend.

There is, somewhere on this P.C., an on-board spell checker, which seems to be working fairly well, except for one (to me) important little fact. It only spells American English. I'm fed up trying to teach it to spell properly, so where is it so I can tell it direct? My keyboard is set correctly but the two don't seem to be connected. I've looked on 'Garble' and found nothing to help (as usual).

You "should" be able to right click in a "typing field" and under spellchecker have the option to change the default language. What browser are you using, that said Chrome the spell check is built in Firefox I have a third party addin!

FF in W10.

Cheers for that Jimmy. usually the simple that gets overlooked round here. It's allowed me to add a language but not allowed me to change it (yet?) I'll drop out do a re-start and see what happens.

Edit: - It didn't need a re-start just the 'dictionary' adding as well as the 'language pack'.

Note there is a major update just released Tuesday.... there are some reports of losing files in "my documents" so back up that directory just to be safe... I think it is bogus, but the story has spread like wildfire.

Also note that the update does what every major update does, erases your wifi passwords...

update from 1803 to 1809 177631.1 (the 1809 part changed, that is major) (use WINVER to see your version)
