I'm a tram enthusiast and have made trams Scale G
Country flag
Just start work again on Wuppertal tram 221. I started it years ago, now I
think it comes to an end. During the last steps I worked on the roof part. It is of course not finished. It is 1;22,5 - G Scale.

224+231.jpg

The tram ont the right is the one I'm building now.

IMG220.jpg

This series was from Tw 219-224. The front part was later made like the phots shows. All this work had been made in the workshop depot Heckinghausen. So they called this front type "Heckinghauser Front"

221-24.04.1960.JPG

What I had is the mesurements of the front, but the passengers area is made only by the photos. In the end my model is know 3mm too short of length.

36228-fps-hardtfest-10.07.2011.jpg

Here is an existing modell of that type in my collection. But a friend of mine want this for him self. This modell of tram 220 is also very simple made. The new TW 221 is more detailed.

55148-modellbau-tw-221-02.08.2014.jpg

It started with the passengers cab from a Lgb trailor 3500.

55169-modellbau-tw-221-12.06.2014.jpg

As you here can see.

55196-modellbau-tw-221-09.08.2014.jpg

The drivers cab are made with 3mm thick ABS plastic sheets.

62094-modellbau-tw-221-08.02.2015.jpg

The front roof are fixed.

62098-modellbau-tw-221-08.02.2015.jpg

Three plastic sheets, all together 8mm thick are glued together and with a rasp made into form.

62099-modellbau-tw-221-08.02.2015.jpg

So it has round edgings.

62100-modellbau-tw-221-08.02.2015.jpg

That fitted into the other parts.

62101-modellbau-tw-221-08.02.2015.jpg]

The rain drain is mounted as well.

62310-modellbau-tw-221-13.02.2016.jpg

Painted with a primer, so the details are clear to see.

62311-modellbau-tw-221-13.02.2016.jpg

Here are the rain drains what is more visible.

62312-modellbau-tw-221-13.02.2016.jpg

From Ebay for 1,50 € I had got a roof of an US passengers car. So I cutted it down to be a part for my tram. It has bo be 5mm wider. I'm not sure to use it, or better to use an LGB original roof of the trams. I'm thinking about it.

62314-modellbau-tw-221-13.02.2016.jpg

Now it looks more like a tram car.

Greeting from a rainy Wuppertal, - Peter

Peter many thanks for your Build description and pics. Very useful information about the Roof Curving. Plus use of LGB Bits.
JonD

Considering LGB's 'rubber ruler'.. I think 3mm out is as near 'spot-on' as makes no difference. A very good article, and excellent result.:clap::clap:

Step by step, I'm working on the roof.

62315-modellbau-tw-221-17.02.2016.jpg

Running boards have been made and the stands for the pantograph. Before that the roof is made a bit wider. (6mm) To stabilze it it has a 0,5mm plastic sheet to corver it and underness is a 1mm plastic sheet. Netxt step will be the cover box for the resistors.

62317-modellbau-tw-221-17.02.2016.jpg

For a test is comes onto the car.

62318-modellbau-tw-221-17.02.2016.jpg

It looks ok. and a tram is visible.

62316-modellbau-tw-221-17.02.2016.jpg

With tram 221 a Ksw trailer will be behind it.

62319-modellbau-tw-221-17.02.2016.jpg

The KSW trailer awaits a roof made in baking oven. It will be cupped,.

The next step is nearly done. The box cover for the resistors on top of the roof.

62321-modellbau-tw-221-18.02.2016.jpg

When I shoot the photos, I think I touched the model, so that the parts get a bit out of place where they have to be. No problem, They are not fixed yet.

Peter who can't work on that over the weekend. - A school lession afer being out of school since 1972.

Some more work on tram 221.
Progress on my Wuppertal tram 221: The driver platforms are made. The control box are also made. And last but not least. the entrance steps for the passenger nearly ready.
62374-modellbau-tw-221-19.03.2016.jpg

The entrance steps have been made.

62380-modellbau-tw-221-19.03.2016.jpg

Drivers control box with a door. This door has a lock, like it was in our old trams.

62376-modellbau-tw-221-19.03.2016.jpg

A look into the divers cabin with the controlleer.
Ok I just bid on Ebay for the LGB 21360 Cologne Tram. It was more a frustation bid. I haven't expected to win it. But for 116,00€ including postage - it was mine. :-)

62383-lgb-21360-18.03.2016.jpg

Those Koln Trams are an object of desire, I have 2 as they are MTS Fitted. I also have the Works Car that is MTS Ready but does not like LGB 55021 Chips for some reaseon. That was a very good price for one of these Koln Cars. Well done.
JonD

Thanks JonD. That was really a surprice for me to get the Köln Tram for that price.
I also have the work tram at the original and a secon one. It lost the grey colour and showes only the grey plastic from LGB. Both have got a decoder LGB 55021. I do not have any problems with it. By the way the second work tram will be converted with doors and havond some special work orders. I'm not sure what kind of work tram it will be, buit the colour is than orange.

Ok, today I worked a bit more on my tram. Beore that I had to paint the passengers room and the drivers cabin. The floor at the drivers cabin has got a duck board(?) Than I started to buildt the chassis frames. I made 4 of them. For my tram I do need only two, but my old tram 220 will go to a friend. and I will spend this tram a new roof and new chassis frams. It will look much better than.

62390-modellbau-tw-221-25.03.2016.jpg

The drivers cabin with the control box. The floor ahs got a duck board.

62389-modellbau-tw-221-25.03.2016.jpg

The chassis frams are made. It will get some rivets. I use fixing pins and cut of the head, these are my rivets.
The wheel bearings have to wait.opefully the postman will deliver the orderd motor set.

40855-drk-fest--29.04.2012.jpg

When tran 221 is finished, my friend wille get tram 220. But I will work an that for a new roof and spend it the same chassis frames like 221 has got now.

Today I've got the motors. These are replacement motors for the German electro Loco E 10. They are cheap. For two of them I paid 50,00 € Including postage. Ok the dimensions of the wheelbase are 13mm to wide (124 mm), but that is ok. An other problem is the diameter of the wheels (46mm) They are big. I'M thinkin of using other wheels and take the big one of and use smaller ones. (At the moment I have no clue how to do it.) At this piont I couldtn't work on the motors. So I worked a bit on the frame an started to work on the front bumper. How you call it - headstock?

62397-modellbau-tw-221-26.03.2016.jpg

The new motors, LGB Electro Loco E10 - A replacement set for the two = 50,00€

62402-modellbau-tw-221-26.03.2016.jpg

The frame and the front bumper.

62409-modellbau-tw-221-26.03.2016.jpg

Where they will be fixed.

Peter

The problem with swapping the wheels Peter, will be the reduced ground clearance, I suspect?

Hello Phil, you are right. I tried it and I'll do need some more 2-3 mm to get it on track. :envy:

I would like to buy a piko motor unit, but it is out of stock. I found one on the internet, but it says it is an old one. I don't now, what is the difference with an old and new one. I'll ask them. This motor unit haqs 3 axles, but the middlle one is with out any function and can be removed and than it has 114 mm wheelbase, I need only 111 mm but 1.5 mm doesn't care. I Think I'll cange this, when the old unit is exactable.

64424-modellbau-tw-221-01.04.2016.jpg

The bumpers are nearly finished. Some rivets will be added.

64423-modellbau-tw-221-01.04.2016.jpg

Body, chassis and motor has been added.Tomorrow i'll pla..., I'm testing it on tracks.

64422-modellbau-tw-221-01.04.2016.jpg

The Lgb Trailer has been a measure car.

64419-modellbau-tw-221-01.04.2016.jpg

Because the bumpers have to be in the right positions.

Tomorrow will be sunshine here. So I'll lay out some tracks and do a test ride. :h:

Peter

That looks very good Peter..

If the Piko motor-block is an old one, could it be from the Kamel diesel lok?
There were problems with the ?alloy? the wheels were made from. They picked up dirt from the track, and were then bad runners.

Yes that's the one I'm looking for, but after your comment here, I leave it and wait until the new one is in stock again.

Thanks Phil.

Peter,
This link just about says it all re Piko Wheels, personally I would not go any older than Generation 6 for reliable running.

Many thanks, JonD,
that is a fantastic link. So I have to wait, till it is available again. I worked on my tram and did also some test rides with it.

Made a movie from that test ride. Also a short sequenze with grinder tram 3241 and its model.

64443-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

The fleet that had to be tested. SOme of those have got a used decoder and others had to be repared.

64428-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

Tram 221 and trailer had to be testead after a repair of the couplings.

64432-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

Also it was there to make the changes visible between Tram 220 and tram 221.
64431-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

Tram 221 will be more detailed than 220.
64441-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

220 (right) will have a renewing and like later simular than tram 221.
64427-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

But first tram 221 (right) has to be finished.

64425-modellbau-tw-221-02.04.2016.jpg

Parts of the Wuppertal fleet, who needed a testride.

Little works had been made. Small details. That means you can't see the progess, wile you are working. It startd with the headlight. Than the back light and the braek lights followed. The bulb fittings are made with a 6 mm brass pipe. The hole must be 5 mm for LED's..

64645-modellbau-tw-221-jpg-16.04.2016.jpg

Headlights are from a LGB Tram. It was shortend.

64652-modellbau-tw-221-jpg-16.04.2016.jpg

The back and break light are made from a 6 mm brass pipe. Inside it has a 5 mm drilling hole for red
back light and orange break light.

64647-modellbau-tw-221-jpg-16.04.2016.jpg

The trucks had got axle boxes and spring packs. The spring pack are made with plastic stripes and
glued together and fixed on the trucks. (a fiddeling work) Next step will be 96 rivets for the trucks.
Means cut off 96 pinheads from 96 fixing pins. Drill 98 little holes in the trucks and glue the pinheads
in place. Puuuuh.

64644-modellbau-tw-221-jpg-16.04.2016.jpg

Peter all very nice models and work.

For your next vid, can you please consider a slower speed. Perhaps 50-60% of what you did on this one. Personally I set all my Locomotives to a scale 40KPH Max. I do this with my iPhone and an app called "Model Speed". If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod it works on all of these. You can then modify your Chip somthat the Top Speed is restricted.
JonD

Edit have hard a hard time trying to find the app, not sure if it is still available but still working with my current systems and updates. If you can't get it I could give you some approx times for speeds over a 2 metre section of Track.

dunnyrail dunnyrail This was a test run to see the motors running. The film was made with my Sony reflex camera. It is not the best. The moot has got a LGB decoder 55021. So I hope to find someone to set the speed limit. I'm a beginner with the decoder things and have no experiences with them. Even I don't know how to program the decoders. I tried it twice with no success.

Puhhh! 128 rivets made and then drilled little holes into the tram and then glued to it. Wich one I forgot to set up? Don't know yet.

  • Also the axle bearing is made together with the compound springs. 4 springs are still missing.
