In early June we will be visiting relatives in Wolverhampton. I've been promised another visit to the Severn Valley Railway, but I wondered if there are any other places I should consider? Shops? Museums? Restored engine sheds? Preferably close - I already checked GRS in Princes Risborough and they are a couple of hours away.
Suggestions welcome!

Trams should be running to Wolverhampton Station with luck. Black Country Museum Dudly, has Trams, Trolley Buses, Canal Wharfe and superb retro buildings. Telford oldest Iron Bridge and Iron Museum nearby. Telford Steam trust short Steam Railway. Bridgnorth Funicular, just recently re-opened.

Jon, my cousin Sam, Mrs tac and I passed through Ironbridge in both directions after a great visit to the RAF Museum at Cosford a couple of weeks back, just off the M54 and not far from Telford. Ironbridge was absolutely HEAVING. Just a warmer into the bank for any prospective visitist. Just sayin'.

Chasewater is not a million miles away from Wolverhampton..
I am sure the guys in the attic at the Chasewater Heaths Station would welcome you?

Hmmm. We passed through at around 10am and people were walking in the streets because the pavements were full......................

That's the problem with popular sites, they're popular, and usually aren't built to be popular! We went a few years ago, out of season, and it's was quite pleasantly quiet. I would avoid the regatta weekend though!

Ironbridge is a bit of a tourist trap - world, his dog and the neighbours dog usually ends up there.

Haven't been to Blakc Country museum for a while but definitely a good shout - nice and local.

Chasewater and walks in Cannock Chase are a plus (if you like walking). The setup at Chasewater is really good - if you happen to catch a day where the G Scale railway is running upstairs at Chasewater Heaths station then there is that bonus too. Relatively cheap and would can walk round it in a couple of hours.

Again on the theme of walking is the old Wombourne branch which can be picked up from Aldersley with plenty of old interesting infrastructure still remaining.

The old Low Level station in the town is a good one for a spare half hour to have a walk around as its mostly accessible.

Bit further away but Statfold for the Barn Railway just the other side of Tamworth. Be about an hour's drive but we'll worth a day if you've not been before.

Hi Fred

I live in this area near a small town called Much Wenlock (as featured in the john cleese film "clockwise") and has a very old Clunniac Abbey. Avoid the canteen at Kiddy station on the svr, had the worst food there the week before last ! instead have a walk around the museum (free) and use the cafe, make sure you wander upstairs at the Kidderminster Railway Museum as often there are some interesting things up there. You have a shop called Footplate next too Kiddy station but there is no longer much Gscale stuff there, thats all online or at the shows (just seen them at a show today) . On the SVR the Engine shed at Highley is great and my fav pub in the area can be found at Bridgenorth station ! ask for a pint of Bathams seeing as you must be related to the black country folk ! Bridgnorth is defiantly worth a look around (Shakespeare Pub in center, A Joules brewery pub, offers great pub food and friendly staff) as the cliff railway and antique shops are a good mooch. Shrewsbury is also a great town to mooch and visit too.

I can confirm Ironbridge is best visited "later" in afternoon, If you are driving take a little walk near Coalport and check out the B&B at the old station HERE, Here are some ideas for you of my favourite things in the area, some mentioned on here before:

KINVER ROCK HOUSES
Harvington Hall (secret priest holes !)
The Engine house
Bliss Hill Victorian Village
Coalbrookdale The furnace cafe here is great
Wroxeter Roman City (very old !)
Cosford Royal Airforce museum
Shrewsbury
Welshpool & Llanfair Railway (about an 1hr 10mins from Wolverhampton)

regards, Richard

If you, or anyone else is in Wolves, call in the "The Great Western" pub just below Wolverhampton station by the old GWR low level station, good ale and food:)

I fully concur with that having been a few times myself.
