What track?

Hi all, I'm building a garden railway in my modest garden but I have an Aristocraft dash 9. Could you suggest best track to use to get curves of circa 10-12ft diameter. I bought some lgb r5 but this is too wide for one end of my garden so I need to create a tight curve at other end.
Many thanks ;-)

I would stick with LGB for outside.. Even second-hand it will be fine..
As for 10-12 foot diameter, see below..

And what you can get in!  ;)

If you need slightly less than r5 you can use flexi or even adjust (cut) the web underneath and ease it shorter/tighter). This is how I acheive an r5 two track section where the inner is "r4.5". See main lines in pic. Lgb looks gold when laid but now is nicely darkened.

My old comparison diagram that I posted here might be helpful?

Hi Phillip I'm concerned R3 isn't quite wide enough for my dash 9? Looking for 10' and R5 is right at the limit of the garden...I know Aristocraft (now bust) did in between sizes and possibly piko...hmmm why don't LGB do a R4 lol?!

Worth checking my maths but I think Piko G-R7 is just over 10 foot diameter.

The radius is definitely 1565mm 61.61 inches (centre to centre).

I make this 10.2 foot diameter.

Regards

Rob

I believe there was an R4 in the dim and distant past..

The Dash 9 will go round R3 no problem.. As long as you do not view it from directly above, it does not look too bad. - I have had one going round the outer loop on the Harz layout.. It even goes round the really tight curve on the inner track, as does a SD45.

These radii are really 'silly' prototypically, but as you have found, most of us do not have the real estate for 'scale' curves! :( ;) :D ;D ;D

Yes philp I would love to run scale curves but can't on my land...I'm actually trying to plan out how to drop some hieght employing a helix integrated into a rockery...should work fine as I've done it previously in 'oo' .
Yes it's crazy LGB don't just do an out of the box R4 ???? I will look into the Piko again as for the area I intend to track messing about with flex track is a last resort...the engineering and hard landscaping involved in my helix idea will be enough to keep me busy as it is lol ;-)

Just baffles me why LGB who undoubtably supply most of the track to g scale modelers the world over don't have a consistent R1,2,3,4 and 5 run of Radiaii especially around the 10-12ft sort of size??!! Yet both Aristocraft and USA trains do (or did) and Piko it seems...don't understand the logic why if indeed it did exist it was allowed to be faced out...Bring it back please ;-)!!!

Thiel make track in 12 radii ranging from 76.5cm to 300cm. I have included a link below to their website.

Hope this helps

for 10 and 12 foot I would search out some old Aristo stock. good solid basic track and similar to LGB and others.
