Yes, that is an old T2. Good find.

BTW, the narrow gauge lines in Romania are using VW and Ford vans to this day.

Some redneck friends of my father up in Ohio used to do this on a closed line in a rural area, deflate the tires on the car and drive along the rails. Gotta go slow at turnouts for the reasons you point out.

Yes, beer was involved. :D

The original air-cooled VW Beetle was called the type 1 (1938 to 1979).

The van & pickup range was called the type 2 up to 1990. This included the split-window up to 1968, the bay-window up to 1980, then the brick from 1979 to 1990. The brick was air-cooled for the first few years and then was water-cooled, using a golf engine.

The type 3 used the basic beetle engine with a much-altered cooling system that meant the engine would fit under the floor of the saloon (Notchback), estate (Variant or Squareback) and the Fastback. This range ran from 1961 to 1973 and included the first mass-produced engine using electronic fuel injection

This next bit is complicated because VW called their largest air-cooled car the type 4, 1968 to 1974, and then re-used type 4 for the fourth generation commercial from 1991.
The type 4 car range was a 2-door saloon, a 4-door saloon and a 2-door Variant (Estate).
The whole car, engine, g/box, body, was completely new; the only range ran from 1969 to 1974.

VW marketing in USA was independent (model ranges & names coud be different) and produced some of the most brilliant car ads ever.

Happy days.

Hi there ,
So what happens when thy need to go in the opposite direction? Hanging out of the window not a good option . You would either need a turntable or run two of them back to back as a multiple unit . This is what put me off using them . I suppose you could also chop 2 together .
Cheers Garry

They had turntables on the bottom of them, there are pix of this on one of the German language large scale forums (Buntbahn I think).

While not on a bus, this shot of a Peugot 404 in the film "Zivot je Cudo" shows how it works.
